So i just put a little gun oil on a cleaning rod thing and used it on the inside of the barrel on my 30-30 to clean it. I'm reading that oil inside the barrel could cause an explosion. is this true? and if so what do i do so that i can shoot it?

Never heard of any barrel exploding because of a light film of oil in it. I have read some articles about barrel bulging. Just run a dry patch thru the barrel before you go shooting and you're good to go.

I have always run a light film of oil in my barrels. Last thing I do when cleaning is run a lightly oiled patch down the barrel. Helps keep the corrosion out of there. Never had any issues, and never heard of anyone else having any problems. My shotgun is at least 40 years old and still looks brand new. Ever since my dad bought it brand new before giving it to me it has had a light film of oil in the barrel....

When I am done cleaning my guns, I have always ran a patch down the barrel with a little Remington oil on it, Rifles, shotguns or Muzzle-loaders, been doing it for over 50 years, I have never had a problem yet.

You're not going to blow up a gun but you can ruin a barrel real quick if there is too much oil left inside the bore.
Liquids do not compress. So what happens is the oil builds up in front of the bullet as the bullet is traveling down the bore. If enough oil builds up in front of the bullet the oil will squeeze itself between the bullet and the barrel. When this happens it will leave a hydraulic ring in the barrel where the oil pushes the steel outward. It will look like a perfect little circle inside the barrel. Happens all the time with 22 rim fires and hand guns and often enough in center fire rifles. Not really a problem in shotguns because of the "soft" nature of the shot and wad. To be honest I am very surprised it doesn't happen far more often with AR's the way people love to oil the crap out of them. Here's a pic of an "oil donut" in a rifle barrel. ![]()

Needing their ever-increasing supply of bananas, the trained monkeys will continue to dance for their bananas. Last edited by bigbulls; 12-29-2012 at 09:37 PM. |
