I forget all about GTP... If you are in an area with high geo thermal output, you would be "less than wise" not to use it for some needs (hot water for one)... I am 100% out of the loop when thinking of this power source outside of the obvious Yellowstone type areas... I don't know how deep drilled holes would have to be to use this in our area.

You don't have to go very deep and some of the systems are actually not deep but horizontal. These systems are good for hot water, cold water and most importantly, heating and AC. My uncle also uses his for refrigeration also. His system uses a combination of underground closed loop and a lake open loop.

A person I work with just had tests done in McDavid and was told that he would need between 60 and 80 feet to make a difference. That being said my dad who lives in PA only had to go 15 feet to make a difference, but it was gonna cost about 36000 to retrofit the house with the systems and lay the field and when calculating the savings he would have needed to live in his house about 110 years to actually make some money on that investment. I'm not sure but that doesn't sound like a good investment to me and where he lives there is no permits that he would have needed that would add on to the 36 or so.
