Default FWB / Destin West to Biloxi or New Orleans

Planning a few trips west the next few months, have never been west of Orange Beach so far. We would like to do some cruising over to maybe Biloxi or Gulfport or even New Orleans. I'm totally familiar with FWB/Destin to Key West, but have never been west.

Resources? Cruising guides, books, where would you start to plan trips like this? What marinas would be available, services, all that? Things to avoid, bad marinas, navigation issues, etc?

Thanks in advance for your help

If you go to the New Orleans area fishing for Redfish.....you can't help but to catch you limits. The Redfish are piled up over that way and LA has generous redfish limits (5 per day with one over slot.....unless that has changed recently). I miss that fishing over that way. LA = Sportsman's Paradise.

My favorite spot when I lived out that way was Port Sulphur / Grand Bayou......about a 45 minute ride south (on I think Hwy 23) from the Westbank of New Orleans. Launch at Happy Jacks (might want to double check to see if in operation since Hurricane Katrina)......but others in the area.

If you want the best of the best trip......go to Venice, LA.

Can't really recommend any guides, as I took my own boat back then.

Oh, one more note.........if you go to Venice, LA.....you really need to hire a guide as if you don't know what you are doing out there......you can really get in trouble quick. Venice involves navigating on the lower MS River........lots of barges / work boats / towboats, etc. traffic; not to mention the currents etc. of the river down that way are trecherous.

I'm located in Pascagoula (Just west of Mobile Bay) so I guess I know this area reasonablly well. Marina's are unfortunatley pretty far and few between, especially post Katrina. If you want to stop in Biloxi I'd try the Palace Casino and see if you get a transient slip there. If your trailering of course there are more options. The biggest attraction between Mobile Bay and Louisanna is the barrier islands. These are part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore park that you see in Pensacola et. al. The only difference is that here they're 8 to 12 miles offshore and accessible only by private boat (except Ship Island which hasa ferry during the summer). These islands make for pretty good fishing and are pretty much completely deserted other than a few party spots. I run back and forth between here and Orange Beach a few times every year. It's 60 miles from here to there. It's about 100 from here to New Orleans proper so if that's your destination I'd plan a lay over in Biloxi. There are one or two marina's where I am but they tend to be more like fish camps than what you'll be used to. There's really nothing to avoid per se, but you may find the area a little light in cruinsing attractions.

Let me know a little more of what you're wanting to do and when you're wanting to be this way and I'll give you what local knowledge I've got.
