Default Federal Water Closures

Does anyone know what areas of federal waters have been closed around Destin? I know a couple days ago they were close West of the pass.

The map is at www.noaa.gov. Click on the fishing closure link that is one of the three main links on the home page. I believe federal waters are closed to just East of Destin Pass, but the line does not go directly offshore. They update daily at noon with changes taking effect at 6 PM.

What exactly does closure mean? I cant seem to find a definition anywhere. Just maps of closed areas...

1 Commercial vessels not allowed to harvest.

2 Recreational harvest not allowed

3Recreational harvest not recommended

4We will arrest your butt for being there!!!

What is the deal? My fishing spot is on the very edge of closure, about 6.5 miles out. Closure may be coming to my spot too. I'm planning my first of 2 trips toour beach housein
July. But no point in coming if area is closed and fishing is not allowed. I release most catch anyway, but if all fishing prohibited... Whats the point?

I'm angry about paying for a saltwater boat that I may no longer be able to use. I cant imagine the feeling of those that depend on the tourism and fisheries for a living. My prayers and concerns go out to all of you.

As to what the rules of the closure are I believe its closed to all fishing, but not closed to transit.

If you want to "test" closure (which means NO fishing by anyone for anything) go ahead and try. The fine that has been set up for violators is $5000.00.

If your spot is only six miles offshore, then you will be fine in Florida waters since they extend tonine miles from shore. The question of whether or not state waters will be closed is up to FWC with the advice and consent of FDEP.

If you are in Alabama waters, the federal closure comes in to three miles from shore. Some Alabama state waters have already been closed - not sure to what extent at this time.

Do you have a reference for this information?
