Default Destin - Beach Wahoo and Tuna?

Hello All,

Went fishing Saturday 5/9/15 in our little Cape Horn. We got super lucky and landed a Wahoo less than 1 mile off the beach!? Has anyone heard of a wahoo being caught in this close recently?

Our first fish of the trip was a nice sized blackfin tuna so we were already pumped but we were amazed when after a 20 minute fight we saw color and stripes!

Tuna was caught on a small pink Bait-O-matic with cigsicle.

Wahoo ate a jumbo live cig right off the back of the boat while we were sitting still / re-rigging our gear. -JJ

That's awesome!! The wahoo are around all summer nearshore around Destin as long as there is bait and clean water.

I remember back in the late 90s/early 2000s I helped run the Aquanaut and Barracuda II for Aquanaut Scuba shop. We would run a heavy jet head out the back on extended dive trips both down east and west towards Timberholes, and would get a few wahoo each summer. One afternoon, a small sailboat came into Destin harbor and meet up with us at the dock. They wanted to catch something big and so I told them just to run a two line spread under sail and cruise just off the beach with dusters and frozen cigs. That evening they came in all excited and pulled a 65-70 lb. Wahoo out of their cooler…

Moral of the story is that fish have tails and can swim wherever. Anytime you have a lot of bait and pretty water, you have the possibility of catching wahoos, and even sails/Mahi/Blackfins (and even Yellowfins on a rare occasion – seen one hooked off Okaloosa Island Pier back in day). Obviously you’ll have to weed through a lot of Macks and Bonitas in order to get to them…

Thanks for the info, atlantacapt! I was wondering if a yellowfin had ever been hooked off the area piers. -JJ

We went East. Tuna was caught nearly right outside the pass where everyone catches bait.

Wahoo was just a bit east of there. -JJ
