Default Catfish slime debate

Weigh in on the old adage " Once you get catfish slime on your line, you won't catch anything else". I have a hard time believing that, but it seems in my own experience that once I catch a cat, I only catch cats the rest of the time. Could be that it's just that the cats are feeding at that time.

I've always attributed it to the fact that catfish school up just like any other fish. I've had outings where I only caught catfish, but caught other species the next time out with the same mono leader.

Quit tossing it straight to the bottom and something else might have a chance to eat it.

On almost every trip to 3mb you get a mix of catfish, reds, white trout and the occasional Spanish or bluefish depending on time of year. I always wipe off as much slime as I can but don't think there's much to the myth.

I fish lure and bottom simultaneously, keeps the action going. With all due respect, the way I fish wasn't what the original post was about.

Seems the rest of y'all 's thoughts are so far right in line with what I think. I'm curious if anyone else has a strong case for the myth.

If you get punctured by a catfish fin, rub the slime on the injury...it is basically antidote to the bacteria that lives on the fins/spines...other than that it doesn't matter if your line has slime or not...

I always try to get it off my line before I throw back out.

I've caught end some cats, hard head and gafftop At Sikes multiple times than later caught dozens of reds. Once you start catching multiple hard heads you either need to leave or start throwing artificials.

Great reply Yakker!! Unless someone else can show me some scientific study proof, I'm going to go Mythbuster on this one and say it's busted. One question though, is it only the hardheads that travel in schools /gather for feeding frenzies or do the sails and gaffs do it too? I guess I'm getting so obsessed about fishing for other bottom feeders while avoiding the swimming slime factories that I am really growing to despise.
