Default Cast net question

We’ve been out on the red buoys out Pcola and ran across sigs on the surface adjacent to the it. Question is has anyone thrown on them and if so how heavy a net?

I have a 10ft - 17lb - 3/8 mesh net and sometime that isn't enough. If I keep the depth under 8ft deep I can do pretty good. Sigs are as fast as lightning.

I've never been able to net them but they can be caught on the smaller sabikis. I reel slow and they load up on it.

Sabikis are your best bet. Easy most of the time about 30 minutes to an hour to load up on bait. Nets are very hard work but if you get good you can really load up. Question is how much time and effort do you wanna put into it.

I will say there is a trick to sabikis. One day they love to hit red tags then the next they only hit green so take both to be on the safe side. I learned this the long way.

Once upon a time, I loaded the boat with them - in one throw of the net! That was in the pass in Destin. Bull reds had them pushed to the surface and packed tight. Only seen them like that once. As others have said, they're usually too fast for a net.

You have to let the net sink to the bottom if it’s possible.

I had them right on the surface today in droves but they are just too fast!

All I have to input is the Blue Bait Boat catches them with a net and he catches quite a few.

I used to go shallow by the beach, look for the balls of rain minnows, throw the net over them...let them run through the net and make a new ball, pull up the cigs that had been feeding on them, dump 8nto the ice chest...then repeat. Did that one day, then headed to the Mass. FWC boarded me. Officer opened my 55 Qt cooler, filled up with cigs, looked at me and said" you do know there is a 2 king limit, right?"
