Default Can you anchor on the old Pickens Pier or not

I know the rules and I have heard the stories...So can you anchor on the old pier or not? Does someone have exact knowledge of the ruling?

No you cant get within 200' of it I beleive. The yellow marks or whatever color they are on the wall, you are supposed to stay outside of them.

Last year when I went to Ft Pickins I beached about 100 yards east of the pier. When I was walking around and saw a ranger I asked about tieing up to the pier and he said you had to stay 200' away from the pier.

Apples and oranges. New Pier, current regs apply. Old pier, no. However, if your position, relative to the old pier, relative to the new pier, violates the current regs, then clear out.

For example: you could anchor on the NW corner of the old pier on a falling tide and drift over the new pier. Not allowed.

By the same token, you could anchor on theNE corner of the old pier on a rising tide, and be nowhere near the new pier.

All a matter of perspective.

I fish there frequently. It all depends on the mood of the Rangers, FWC, Sheriff, & Coast Guard. The true answer to your question is no you are not allowed within 200 ft. of either pier. However I do it all the time. I have been ran off by all of the above mentioned authorities. I have never received a ticket (knock on wood) but I have been the lucky one watching others get ticketed. Stay to the east side of the old pier. DO NOT get in the way of shore fishermen. They WILL go get a Ranger. The Rangers are the ones who write tickets.

Chris,

I've never had trouble getting close to the old pier structure. I have been instructed about being to close to the new pier.

Been there, done that, been requested to remove vessel to within legal ranges.

Code of Federal Regulations prohibits any vessel within 200 feet of structure.

Fort Pickens Pier Area Closure

Section 1.5 - 21 The following areas are closed to boating operations:

(a) Within 200 feet of the new fishing pier at Fort Pickens.

(b) Within 200 feet of the remnants of the old pier at Fort Pickens.

Determination: The Fort Pickens pier is primarily used by visitors fishing who use hook-and-line, and cast nets. The high concentration of people who use hook-and-line on the pier poses a significant risk of personal injury to any unsuspecting boater who enters the restricted area. Furthermore, the competition between people fishing on the pier and the people boating has risen to a level where acts of violence are not uncommon. The new pier and the remnants of the old pier are within close proximity to one another.

Less restrictive measures would not provide the degree of safety to the public that is reasonable and expected.
