Default Anyone put in a boat lift recently ?

I need to put a lift in and was wanting info on what marine contractor you used and if you recommend them to others, what size lift? lenght of pileings ? and if you put a catwalk on it?

are you satisfied?or would you do something differant?

This will be my first lift, and I don't know squat about lifts

Gimmie some tips and pointers if you would, I'm ready to get a few estimates

Before choosing which lif, look into the manufacturers lift capacity rating claims. There is one very popular boat lift utilizing cables.

They rate the lift capacity on the ultimate breaking strength of the cable instead of using the working load limit of the cable.

Nat you need to find out the weight of your boat fully gassed + any equipment you might have aboard. Then from there you can figure out what size lift you will need if you are close on the weight I suggest stepping up on size. I am not in the business any longer but I used to sell Golden Boat lifts and Tide Tamer. Both great lifts. Although there are a few differences, when I got out Tide Tamer was manufacturing Golden' lifts for them. Both have specs on the size of pilings to use and spacing them. I like the aluminum lifts myself. If want a lower quality lift you can go with a galvonized ACE lift. There is a little more to installing one of these and there not as good. They will not last as long as a aluminum lift but for the price they are not bad. There are obviously other brands of lifts out there but those are the ones I am most familiar with.

If you need any pointers or advice let me know. Its been a few years but I think we can get it figured out.

I can't remember the brand right off, but my dad and I put two in his boat house last year. They were cable systems and turned out great, but we put a lot of labor into it. I'd definitely try to get a contractor to handle it if you have the funds.

Like one of the posters quoted, capacity and knowing the extremes are very important. Where will the lift be installed? Ground conditions below? Sand, sand/shell, sand/rock......these things, as well as the overall weight of your vessel will determine piling size and length and how many required. Bunks to me are better than straps but again, there factors involved with that as well. Depending on your location, Wendall Simmons at Simco Marine (Gulf Shores)has done a great job for us in the Bon Secour area. Any knowledgeable lift installer will point you in the right direction.
