Default 1997 Mercury 225?????

Looking at the NADA book there are 10 different 225 listing for the 1997 2 stroke Mercury Motor. Like XL, XXL OS, XL EFI OS, L, EFI, CXL EFI OS etc. What do all the different letters mean.

Going to travel 600 miles to look at a boat with a 1997 225 Mercury on it Tuesday. If I can find the appropriate lettering how do I understand it?

What's the forums thoughts on this particular engine. Thanks

Onmost motors the L XL XXL is the shaft length. They are normally 20, 25, and 30 inches. Shaft length all depends on the transom height. I don't know about the other letters since I don't own a Merc.

EFI was a type of merc made that stands for electronic fuel injection. They are awesome motors in my opinion, probably the only mercury I would own to be quite honest. The xl etc are just shaft lengths.

Ok, got the shaft length and the EFI, would the OS maybe be for "off shore", like a saltwater version? Thanks

If you can get the serial number, then you can find out exactly what it is.
