Default Old Country Doctor

Old Doc Adams was famous for his cough syrup. Worked better than anything the Drug Stores sold. People would come for miles when they needed relief from a pesky cough. He would go in his store room, get a bottle, give it to his nurse, and tell her "Give this to the patient, and tell them to take three tablespoons a day...when it's all gone, bring me a urine sample back in the bottle." This went on for years, and finally the nurse had to ask,"Doctor, why do you always tell me to have the patients bring back a urine sample in the bottle. Doc Adams says, "Well hell, it's the only way I can get my bottles back. You know how much those things cost?"

I once knew an old Pennsylvania Dutch Dr. in Pennsylvania that would do this.
