Kevin,
A friend was in Vaughan Lake yesterday and reports small pod of shad were spawning but there were no big fish on them. This was in the little slough up the lake. I haven't been to Vaugan in a good while so no sure where the slough actually is.
It was like that in the Dunwood lake area I could see strikes but could not connect wonder if live shad or shiners would be the ticket maybe with a popping cork on top or maybe fish a outgoing tide, just a theory I got skunked tues I had either a eel or snake try to grab my lure not sure which never heard or seen anything like that I have caught eels on earthworms never had one hit a lure or a snake for that matter all I can do is try again had someone tell me that the shad were up as far as Pinelog I will be somewhere on the lower end tues or wednes
Today I hit Indian River about 8:30 About 200 yard below the cut off there were fish stricking on top all over the place. Not a frenzy, but very often and single strikes. I could see small bait balls with big fish on the sonar. They were numerous. I threw maybe 8 or 9 baits and did not get a single strike. Never could figure what they were but I'm guessing hybrids.
Finally ended up in Little Sister. 3 small gills on fly rod. Snagged and lost 3 nice bass, one was a big'un, maybe 3 to 4 pounds. Was using a plastic worm. Finally decided I was not sticking them hard enough and hook was not penetrating good. But then I got no more stricks to test my theory. Quit about 2:30.
Kevin, you doing anything these days? Last few trips out I have been working the lower river area for specks and reds. Have caught a lot of fish over past few weeks but few keepers. Right now the lower areas of Mitchess, Choctaws, Nancys Cut, Indian and Cypress are producing. They are full of fish and fairly easy to locate and crtch, but keepers are few, at least for me.
When it gets a little colder the larger fish should be pushed into the deep holes in the river. Yesterday was temp was 68
I plan to start looking for crappie soon. Going up to Dothan on Wednesday and plan to stock up on crappie minnows. For $3.50 you get about 3 1/2 doz. I have a large chest and pump that will keep them for weeks with water changes
Okay thanks for the tips I have a idea where everything is down there just a matter of finding it if you decide to go down there maybe I'll see you I will be on a red avalon boat
Sounds like a good boat to get I myself would want the stick steering for the river the fish are biting in the river still pretty good had a good catch thursday have fun in Texas
I'm headed down to High Springs tomorrow to look at a boat. It's a 2007 G3 1448PF (pan fish) but not stick steer. Has a 25 Yamaha. Nice boat. Made an offer and to my surprise the guy accepted, that is if I like it when I get there. Hopefully it will work out and I can take it to Texas with me. Have a lot to do over the next couple of weeks and might not get to the river before the trip. Sure is nice weather still for some nice morning fishing. Will be in touch.
