Hello. I am through your shop frequently and need some advice for a good heavy duty bottom drop set up. I come to realize you are the "go to man" for all reel and rod questions. I am looking at the Talica 25 II and the Penn Torque 25 along with a reasonably priced/sturdy rod (preferably bent butt/stand-up). What would you recommend for a reel (want to stay in the $650 range or lower) and what would you say for a rod? I am interested in any Avet, Accurate, Daiwa etc. Just looking for something light with a strong drag system and won't break down on me from vibration or faulty drag system. thanks man. Enjoy reading your posts and getting your expertise.

Corey S. says your are the man to ask about surf fishing. So I have a question for you. Past two times fishing have been at night using live shrimp and have only caught catfish. What am I wanting to catch you ask? Pretty much anything but catfish.

Chris--I very much enjoy your posts. Do you have a bait/tackle store? If so, can you tell me where it is? We spend time in that area in the fall and spring and would like to have a go-to place for tackle and such. thanks and best wishes,

Chris, I picked up another Atlas Kona 400. What do the matching power handles run?

Hey Chris, sorry to bother again. You seems to post the most knowledgeable post and comments. I would really like to an overnight sword trip on my boat. I have never sword fished before, is there any tips you could lend or maybe the possibility of talking you into going with, it would not cost you a dime, just want the knowledge. My boat is a 2670 Glacier bay island runner Cat. Twin 130 hondas with 180 gallons of fuel. Thanks for the info

The Ion is more than adequate. Its not the lightest, but it is a good workhorse reel. Solid and with a decent drag. I own 3 and did own a 10/12 before selling it to a buddy who wanted an inexpensive bluewater outfit.

The 10/12 sells for 129.99 and the extra spools are 50 bucks. pretty hard to beat for the performance given thus far

Would you still recommend the Echo Ion for a cheap saltwater fly reel? I'm trying to replace some gear that got stolen out of my boat last weekend, so I'm not dropping $500 on a new reel after that. Feathercraft said it's a freshwater reel and extra care needs to be taken using it in salt. What do you think? I'm also looking at Lamson Konics and Gurus. Also, do they make an Ion that will fit a 12 wt?
