4.79 a can+1.50 a can tax for redseal this morning....I was paying 3.01 a can a week ago AFTER tax (2.79+tax). its still 2.99 a can in alabama after tax though. I got just enough to cover the cost of the extra gas that i burned driving over there . you can definately make it worth your while though when you're paying half the price
btw...skoal was 5.99 a can+tax (a dollar an ounce)...so you guys that were complaining about paying 6.50 a few days ago...well its 7.50 or so now.

Yeah its pretty ridiculous to tax something like this so much money. It is Communism and no less than that.Because i enjoy doing something that someone sees as being harmful they want to raise the taxes by that much.
alcohol causes more teenage deaths than tobacco ever thought of.Doctor malpractice causes more deaths than tobacco and alcohol put together.
I mean if they really want to do it right lets just tax everything a little extra that causes injury's,Hell lets just go ahead and slap a dollar tax on gas now while were at it.
I cannot believe our government is allowing this bullshit. So because i like to smoke i now have to pay an extra dollar of my money to people that dont want to work.
Now that is gonna make all the welfare folks who smoke have to Bumb even harder and break more laws to pay for there habits.
WHY in THE F&^CK did they decide to do this crap when the economy is bottoming out.I mean really.More taxes on tobacco means less jobs now for tobacco farmers and MORE cutbacks at the factory's.Its a joke is what it is and i dont see how these ASS%*LES get elected.

will...my main thing is I don't understand why the tobacco companies raised their prices along with the tax increase. but not only did they raise their prices, but they almost doubled them (2.79 to 4.79) yet its still 2.79 in alabama?

| Not enough people are willing to stand up in force against government, at all levels. Everyone is mad about tax increases but only a couple hundred show up for the Tea parties???? Sure, they may not make a dent in the runaway spending but it get's in the news media, which is a start. I'm just curious how long it will be when we find out the tobacco tax is not actually going to fund what it's supposed to. Just like the lottery, FEMA money and such, it's going to be spent on "special projects". Voting has consequences!!!!!!

If i'm not mistaken it was the state of Florida that just went up on Tobacco. They were trying to close budget gaps so if you smoke, dip, or drive a car you will pay more. I heard that car tags almost doubled. Be glad you don't live in California, they are issuing IOU's for everything because they have no money.

| I made a tobacco and fireworks run to Alabam on Friday. I figure I'll be making a trip to Alabama every 10 days or so. Florida can get their $1 of tax from someone else.

angus_cow_doctor (7/6/2009) Welcome to Florida, AKA the mini-california!So when do we get medical pot? I think I have glaucoma. Seriously though, legalize weed and tax that so they don't have to add more taxes to tobacco and alcohol. People are buying the sh!t out of it even though it is illegal, make it a legitimate industry and get some tax revenue out of it. They had a guy in california on the news who ran ONE dispensary that paid over a million dollars a year in taxes between state and federal, and that's without any excise tax on the product. It would bring in billions just in extra sales tax, not to mention what an excise tax would bring on top of that.

| It's crazy what going on with the sin tax. Our best weapon is to boycott tobacco sales. I think it would send a huge message if we stopped buying their product.

The goverment is in buisness to reduce our rights and regulate us from the moment we wake up to the second we go to sleep. Just wait, it wont be long and we will not be allowed to do anythign but work and pay any tax they deem is "Needed" I figure another 5 years and florida will have state income tax. I am not a smart individual but it seems to me the economy is in shambles and the solution is not to tax everything in sight. I can assure you that I will not vote for anyone that is in office now. Hopefully they will not do to much damage before these idiots are voted out.

| I watched a show on MSNBC last light called Marijuana,INC . It was hosted by al roker. They said that if we legalized pot, and taxed it, then it would generate between 14-40 billion dollars between the money saved on DEA agencies and income from taxes. Just think of all the people in prison due to pot. One in 31 people in this country are in prison. That is the highest per capita of any nation. Who gets to pay for that? YOU AND ME! And you wonder why they need to collect more money in taxes.... I am just waiting for them to socially engineer us into full blown socialism. That is their goal, make no mistake.

And when the number one question posted to Obama online was "are you going to legalize pot?", his answer during a news conference was to snicker at the question and dismiss it as a means of economic stimulus (guess an extra 10-20 billion isn't what he's looking for). Thanks for the change, yeah right. Our prisons are so overcrowded that we let violent offenders (killer and rapists that shouldn't be allowed to breath) go, while we are locking people up for pot.

I'm amazed at how many folks still use tobacco based on the cost. That must be some super inelastic demand. Saw an article that California was putting warning labels on the legal Mary Jane too - appears that it's long been known to carry many cancer causing agents.
How many of you tobacco users are going to quit based on the price increase - that would be an interesting percentage. My nephew said that he quit because of the cost so I guess there are some that do.

Prohibition has never worked! I could see funding "The war on drugs" if it worked. Ask any kid in high school is it easier to buy alcohol or marijuana.

| Think about it.... In order for this tax to do any good, by this I mean earn revenue, new users will have to be added to the equation. How can you, on one hand, promote health, then require unhealthy habits to subsidize a cause? Does that make sense? It's oximoronic.

.WRONG! The latest studies from Donald Tashkin, a pulmonary specialist at U of C, show that there is no association between an increased risk of lung cancer and smoking pot. Not even with heavy use. It does increase your risk for COPD if you also smoke cigs, but if you are a not a tobacco user it doesn't. The new warning labels were politically motivated, just like the current prohibition. Plus cannabis can be consumed in baked goods, taken in an oral tincture, or vaporized.
