| For the past several years, there have been Really cheap combos at all the big box junk outlets. I mean $19.87 spinning combos. But, yesterday morning I went by Half Hitch in Panama City and they had a ton of this type tackle as well. I would have never dreamed that I would see that type of tackle in a "Just Good" tackle shop, much less a so Called "Great One". These things are almost "Disposable". Crap is not an understatement as to the quality of the product I am speaking of. Who is buying this stuff, and what are they doing with it? I hope noone sees this as a bashing, but I have never seen so much Trash as far as fishing tackle goes. I see where you once a year tourist would want something like this. One thing is for sure the combo won't last til next year, and China is loving it. Why?

| If you are in the retail business you have to have an offering for everyone. They have them because the sell 20 of them a day to tourist and cheapskates. When people are on vacation they want a book of matches not a Zippo.

We carry quite a few of those cheap combos as well here Curtis. Where our shop is located we get more tourists than anything else and they usually don't want to spend more than 30.00 for a rod and reel since they will probably just leave it behind when they are done with it. You have to cater to everyones needs and budgets.

Just so you know...at Cabela's...some of those "junk combo rod's and reels" carry a 25 year no questions asked warranty.

Heck I could put an alarm system in a few minutes, and rented them to people going on vacation, much like your snowbirds.

You see you get your touristas that come down and couldn't care less about a name brand, they just want to say that they wet a line while they were on vacation. A bunch of them are left at the condos or where ever else they stay at when they leave. If you buy junk it doesn't hurt when you leave it behind.

Curtis, I've still got cheap combo's I bought when I was a teen Then again I am cheap Funny story...... I bought a big ole Penn Roddy surf combo from Half Hitch in Destin a couple years ago for $35.00. I have caught 5 + foot sharks on it, and I went out w/ some friends on their boat(offshore) and brought it. Captain of the boat said I didn't need it cause he had all the high $$$ stuff. Well I brought it, and it ended up saving the trip by catching the 3 biggest fish (cow dolphin, and 2 big kings) sooooo those 3 fish paid fer that combo and it's still going strong. I'm a stickler about taking care of my gear so thats probably why it last. You just wanna know how many of us can make a penny bleed

Learn to post like the pro's from the Official PFF Po-Po!Because our family is growing every day, newer folks should learn to post their threads w/ pics correctly without having to click on each picture This does not work w/ all browsers...Those not using Internet Explorer may have to go to a photo gallery of sorts to load their pics... you can use this free photo gallery by PFF : http://www.forumpictureprocessor.com/pictureprocessor/default.asp?reason=You%20Are%20Logged%20Out! Step 1: When in your body of the thread look at the bar above that looks like this ::: IFCode Step 2: Click on the icon that looks like Step 3: A new window will open up and click BROWSE to find your pic, then up load it. Step 4: If your are posting more then 1 pic, after every picture finishes loading hit the enter button to move the cursor back to the far left (underneath the last picture poster) so pictures will not load side by side taking up more area (having to scroll right to read and see pics ) Step 5: When you are finished loading your pics and your body of your thread is complete, post it POSTING YOUTUBE VIDEO's: (compliments of jim t) When you post, at the bottom of the window there are two buttons saying "Design" and "HTML" . I write my post, when I want to insert the video I switch to "HTML" then paste the "Embed code" off the youtube page, then switch back to "design" When you switch into "HTML" you'll get some wierd coding on what you have already posted, but when you switch back to "Design" it will apperar normal and the video will pop up. |

I buy the cheap combos at the annual Outcast sale - at least 2 or 3 - because inevitably the kids (or their friends) are either ROUGH with them on the boat and they just throw them in the sand at the beach.
Then there's my wife - while at Dizzy Lizzy's she saw this HIDEOUS pink Roddy Hunter rod and reel combo where the actually LIT UP when you reel it. It is hideous, but she absolutely INSISTED that I buy it for her for Christmas. It pained me to buy it, but hey - whatcha' gonna do?
My son has finally started showing a little bit of care with his - he's 9 - and he's been "upgraded" this year from a 29.99 outfit to a 39.99 rig.

| I was at the Summerdale Al flea market a couple of years ago and some crazy woman had some Walmart fishing combos priced at 60 and 75 bucks....The same crap at walmart was only 19.99 or maybe 29.99.

| 60hertz hit it right on the spot. My son and I were off to do some bridge for what ever was bitting. After we got to the bridge i gave him one of my some what nice shimano setups, I mean what can happen right. He makes it to the bridge before me and to my horror starts beating the rod on the bridge. As I'm running it closer yelling stop stop, I see the poor lizard running for his life, my son looks at me and says "dad did you see that lizard" he was 8. After that he got a 20 buck walmart rig lol.

| I applaud those who can make those wally specials work for them especially off shore....after i bought my 22 WA 6 years ago all I had was those cheap combos...well they all (3 of them) literally exploded in my hand while in a mess of bonitos fishing the edge...that was funnier than sh*&^ for me and my crew while I learned the value a good reel has....get a good penn combo as they're not too expensive compared to some and fish with confidence. just my .02 Jimmy

| there is a 50% margin on those cheaper reels, and you actually do sell a good amount of them, i'd be willing to bet that halfhitch does more in sales on combos under 50 bucks then they do on all penn reels combined. you make your money on small stuff, bigger ticket items, you don't make crap on... take a shimano stradic for example, 170 bucks retail... that reel wholesales for about 130 bucks. gulps are another thing.... most packs retail for 6 bucks... they cost $4.60 wholesale.

PS..I had the gray plastic Jarvis Walker setup from WalMart...Caught a few sharks and reds on it then gave it to a friend.

| I understand the idea behind why they are produced and why they sell, but I would have never thought so many people would want one. ~~~~~~~~~~ Scale: Junk - Decent - Good - Very Good - Great - Excellent - High End ~~~~~~~~~~ Think about it, except for the $19.87 combo, in most cases for a little more someone could buy a Decent or Good combo that, if taken care of would last many years and provide a better experience while on the water. Someone that really enjoys fishing, and basing the cost of a combo on $19.87, could save up for a short while and buy a Good, Very Good or possibly a Great combo that would be something to not only be proud of, but something that would perform at a level that would open up new angling oppertunities, that the $19.87 combo will not stand up to. I just hope that they had had the chance to learn this before they bought the junk. If I offended anyone or looked as if I would look down at others, please accept my most sincere apology, as I don't look down at a single person, and I didn't intend to offend anyone. But, I do think that anyone, with an acception to the people that are buying for more or less a one time use, could afford better equipment if they knew what it was and how little more it cost. Konz, this is not the first time I have said this, I would like to fish with you one day. My treat.

| I am a surf fisherman wannabe, I get down to seagrove beach 2 times a year and have fell in love with the fishing. I bought a 20 buck combo several years ago, caught lots of fish. This past May I caught a 20 lb red and a 35 lb red on that cheap thing. When I got back home it wouldnt even turn, well worth the 20 bucks. I also have a St Croix and a new 8000 shimano which I am anxious to use. So for us that cant fish everyday I guess the cheap ones are ok, they do catch fish.

They did just fine with some stellar reds and hoss black drum. Piece of crap but served their purpose. If it offends your sensibilities then your skin is a little too thin.

I buy the "cheap" combos to use as bait rods and 'kids day fishing". The kids dont seem to care that much about the quality and they get pretty beat up. But when we "fish" we use mostly Penn stand ups or spinning gear

| You know, now that I have a moment to reflect on it. Imagine walking into a local Bait and Tackle store and the first thing you see is a $800.00 reel, how long would you stay (assuming you dont live near the coast). Even if you did, and you walk around and find an $50.00 lure, how would you feel? You would be all kinds of intimidated. Not really the perception any good business would want to have. I would hope that everyone would be treated the same, even though I know regulars deserve first class service. I have been intimidated by stores and heck even thought I did not deserve to be there, but this forum has taught me otherwise. When you spend a $100.00 bucks on a baitcaster and a great rod for fresh water it is hard to grasp why anyone would spend $2k on one. Curtis, I hate to say it but this post is a little arrogant. I am that guy who comes down a couple times a year and sometimes only once. It takes a lot of stones to bash the main the source of income on the coast other than the military. I dont shop for Junk anymore, now I know why people spend the money they spend. I have 6 rods that are useless in my home state. Three of them have never been used. If they have those types of rods and reels, then maybe the average Joe would not feel terrified by everything else and think maybe, just maybe they have a chance at what those of you who live there enjoy on a daily basis. Just my .02

I said a little. We all are at times. Although I may be assumed arrogant, I will still stand by my thoughts, as my thoughts are that anyone considering buying a very low quality, almost disposible reel, could have something worth having for just a little more. Again, I will apologize if I have offended anyone, but I still think the same way. I have a 706z that I bought 30 years ago and paid $49.00 for it Brand New. It fishes as well today as it did then, maybe a little better. For about $15.00 less I could have bought several things that would have certainly not stood up to the 30 years of use that that reel has stood up to, and I hope that other "Fishermen" would consider this before buying Junk. My Apologies.

| Aw c'mon guys, nobody meant no harm. Garbo isn't being arrogant. He just asks some damn good questions! Some of the best posts I've read on this forum have been his posts. I can also state confidently after some limited correspondence with him that he's one of the nicest guys you could meet. I'm have no doubt he meant no harm, he was just asking for opinions. And here's mine, to be fair. I work on a pretty serious budget out of necessity. In between (and still now) I have made some pretty cheap stuff continue to work just fine between extreme care and maintenance and plain luck. BUT, I do agree, bigger specimens and/or stronger species of fish separate the men from the boys when it comes to gear, especially reels. I had a mid-end Bass Pro brand baitcast reel that I brought with me when I moved. It functioned perfectly as a crankbait reel for over three years. It worked fine for the first few months I was here (along with meticulous care) and then the bluefish started running carpet thick in Perdido Pass about a month and a half ago. After the second night of high tide madness, they finally (literally) blew the reel apart internally. The plastic gears just weren't up to the task. I continue to work successfully with plenty of "budget" along with cheap gear, but my three Penn reels have been the best fishing investment I've made in years. Just my 2 bits.

Interesting topic. I would think that most of it probably is that people have no idea about saltwater gear. I know I get all wide eyed in confusion when I look at it. My son and I come down sometimes and fish on our own before we go out on charters. We use some inexpensive combos mainly because I have no idea about the types of rod & reel combos that are best for the different things. Maybe one of the more experienced guys could come up with a list of combos and post it so that newbies could kind of get an idea of what the more experienced guys think of as good intro types of gear.
