Went out wade fishing in the Sound with a couple friends I hadn't seen in a while. Not much action except 1 lady fish that nailed my buddy's topwater. However, it was a nice morning and it was good to catch up with friends, it had been a bit since last time I got to fish with them.
After they left, around noonish, I took my kayak across the way and put into the surf near the beginning of the newly repaired road to Navarre. Trolled and drifted in about 30ft with dead cigs one on the surface the other rigged with a 3oz egg sinker to get deeper.
Had a decent hit on the deep rig but the hooks pulled. Then a GOOD hit on the top rig that screamed off what seemed like 50yds in 5 seconds then no tension on the line. Whatever it was had cut through halfway up the 31# single-strand leader I was fishing since it was so clear. Had 2 big Jacks buzz the boat while I was switching to heavier leader. Got set up and going again and got knocked down again on the deep rig.
Took my time to make sure I didn't pull the hooks like last weekend. Turned out to be a decent 3foot king and I got to try my newly home-made hand-gaff for the 1st time. Was a messy hit but I got him into the boat and started fishing again.
Went for an hour dry spell then got to quick hits after another that cut the cigs in half between the main and stinger hooks. Rebaited and started pulling again and got chomped by what I thought was a remora a.k.a. shark sucker from the way it was fighting. Got it to the Yak and saw it was a small black-tip or spinner shark, about 2.5feet long. Of course as soon as he saw the boat he freaked and tried to take off. Got him under control and grabbed him behind the head, pulled the hook and released him to grow up.
Came back in at about 3ish, rode a decent wave in almost to shore till it tipped me about 15ft from shore in shin deep water. Fortunately had everything important tied down and a couple bystanders jumped in and helped me grab a couple little things that went over. Hopefully provided some entertainment for the beachgoers. And of course the reels I had with me are sitting in pieces on a towel to dry after disassembled and cleaned them out.
Tight lines,
Alex

| Had my first wipeout Friday. Found a clear place to come in on a packed beach. I get on a breaker to ride in and a little girl decides to run and play in the water directly in my path. I had to pull off and got slammed. Hopefully I made someone's day. Amazingly, I was able to grab the yak, my glasses, hat, and didn't lose anything in my homemade fish box. Guess I'll walk it in next time I hit a crowded beach, but I still feel that I have more control over it just riding in.
