My brother just called me from Pensacola Beach and said he just had a Black Bear run in front of his motorhome. He's staying at the last parking lot toward Navarre. Said it was hauling ass as it went by maybe due to all the fireworks going off on Navarre Beach tonight. He's not a big drinker and usually doesn't see things. Has anyone in that area seen a Black Bear?

It's possible.  There are reports of one or more in the Gulf Islands national seashore area near Gulf Breeze.  I think they even have pictures of him.  When bears feel threatened for whatever reason they will move to water then swim it in search of a better place to live.  He probably felt threatened by all of the people and traffic so he swam the intercoastal

We are heading out tomorrow on the boats for a picnic at Opal Beach on the sound side.  We'll have to keep an eye out for him.  Bears are on the move around here.

Bears are seen a lot in the National Park area of the island. A fews years ago there was one swimming out a few miles in the Gulf headed to Mexico. A boater came up on it a managed to turn him around. They kept him headed north until he got to Ft Pickens. The bear then ran up on shore and kept running.

i had a friend call me a couple months ago.  he was speck fishing the grass flats east of portofino.  he said he saw something that looked like a large dog while he was wading.  he turned around and went back up to the shore to investigate and saw the bear!!  i kinda doubted it but this guy has no reason to BS me.

Over the past 5 years or so there have been bear reports, yet every time people(Media mainly) act like someone discovered sasquatch. It's old news. But I guess for the people that don't get out to the woods it can be fascinating.  There are more bears around here than you would believe. Take a ride through Eglin and track the roads. I saw bear sign as often as deer there this year. Not as much sign just as often. I'm talking not far off HWY 87. They are proliferating there. It's just a matter of time before there is an incident between a bear and somebody. They're pretty thick on Eglin, and sooner or later are gonna wander off the reservation.
