I'm looking at either the Avet JX, Fin Nor Stardrag, Daiwa Saltist, or maybe a Torium. What would you recommend? I'm wanting to spend about $300

Those fin nors are nice. Caught some tunas and bottom dwellers on them

I like the Toriums a lot. They work great and are very easy to work on if you need to.

Daiwa Saltist Black, no doubt. I have it spooled up with 100lb braid on an OIkuma Cedros rod, love it! I switch it to a stout roller rod when targeting just grouper and AJ's, or if I just don't feel like jigging, although I had very good success bottom fishing with the jigging rod as well. That reel puts out some hellacious drag and can be upgraded to an even stiffer drag if you want.

penn torque200 with 65 pound braid loaded.either a trevela not the X raps they suck, or the new key largo jigging rods are very nice . but for 300 i say finnor or torium20 with one of the rods above they work great for me but i have never tried the dawia saltist either. i'm not buying another reel till i see one of these new penn torqe spinning reels.

You never know unless you go.

Penn Torque if you have the money. I love my Daiwa Saltists but I have had to replace the freespool lever on two of them. It was an easy fix but Daiwa kind of dropped the ball on designing that freespool lever. I believe that penn torque reel is bulletproof. Whatever you end up getting try to buy it from a local tackle shop rather than from an online dealer. You don't save any money buying it online and you will be helping out a local business.

Let us know how that works. I have two of the fin-nors with the 6.3 gear ratio and was going to use them for king rigs. Have yet to use them, but they seem nice and light. Wouldn't mind having another one or two with the 4.X gear ratio for jigging. But I'm not so sure they would be a good Heavy jigging reel.

How do you guys find the freespool on the fin nors? We have found the freespool to be very sticky out of the box. You can get into them and work on the arbors to free it up, as some of my friends have done. Once you do that, they are built like tanks and make a killer bait reel.

For a quality budget jigging reel the regular saltist (not saltist H) is the best buy for the money. The toriums are notorious for anti reverse failure at the drag settings that most jiggers fish. The saltist is twice the reel on the inside where it counts. Add some carbon washers from smoothdrag.com + diawa boat braid and rock it out.
