Not as shallow as you think.  My parents live up past that bridge and they have to take the bimini completely off to get under.  And on a real high tide, they can not get out at all.  They have always been limited to the boat that they can own due to that bridge.

No!!! The one on Navy Blvd by Chets or old Vince Webbs. There was talk a year or so back about putting in a taller bridge to allow for boat traffic in the head of Chico.

They just rebuilt the two bayou texar bridges within the last few years and didn't bother to make them tall enough for sportfishers or other boats with towers, and there is a relatively large marina in that bayou.  Unfortunately, I don't think recreational boat access is a major priority for the county.

I thought it was a done deal.  It was made public that the bridge would rebuilt higher which would restict it to two lanes there as they replace one of the bridges at a time.  I know it has been a big deal for a long time for folks that live back behind that bridge.  I grew up back there on the water.  My parrents could never own a boat with a hard top, tower, or anything of the sort.  Even a T-top on a center console can be too tall during high tide.

Yea, that was not smart, I can not get into Texar, just as I can not access Bayou Grande, the Navy base bridge is too low as well. Bummer.

Here is your answer:

SR 30/US 98 - Replacement of the sixty-six year old Bayou Chico Bridge on US 98 is set to begin early January 2009. The project is being constructed by Scott Bridge Company of Opelika, Alabama. Improvements include replacement of the existing dual bridges with a single bridge.  The new, wider bridge will be eight-feet higher than the older structure and consist of four 12-foot travel lanes, two 5-foot sidewalks, and two 51/2-foot bicycle lanes.  It will also have protective pedestrian walls. Additional work will include reconstruction of the roadway approaches, safety and drainage improvements, construction of a retaining wall and decorative lighting to the bridge.  Crews will begin demolition of the old eastbound bridge in January. The westbound bridge will be converted to handle two-way traffic. Construction on the $ 6.4-million project is scheduled to be complete spring 2010.

They have the signs up this week saying that work will start tomorrow.  The infamous orange barrels are out there and it looks like work will get started soon.

There was work activity in this area today.   The bayou is fairly shallow-you would be lucky to find 3 feet all of the way up both sides of the North arm.  Both East and West parts of this North arm, are even shoaler.  I have a friend who used to take a 28 foot inboard most of the way up on the East Side.  Frank Patti had "Patti Cake" up there for awhile (but I/O's).  You have to know where the channel is.  Also under where the old railroad bridge (between PMSYC and Patti boat yard) has a hard bottom--can be as shoal a 2 feet or less when the water is out.  I thought that the clearance was going to be somewhere from 12 to 14 feet when finished.
