Sup everyone,

I've been working offshore on the oil rigs and I'm dyin to go fishing. So far the best I can do is a 1/4 in rope hand line and a 5 ft leader. This hand line has done pretty well landing about 15 mangrove snapper and a couple small sharks. The only down fall has been when I get something big, the sudden jolt from the rope being tied to the hand rail tends to break the 120 leader. We lost a cobia that was close to 70 lbs (oh and we used spam for bait who would of thought.) I bought a Helecopter rod so I am looking for a reel. I think a Penn 330 Gti level wind would fit pretty well but not sure if it would be big enough for bigger fish. Any suggestions??? Got one for sell???

When I used to work out there, the welder on the rig told me to bring back with me on the next crew change, a set of bicycle cranks and a bicycle wheel. He welded the cranks inside the wheel and had a mount he'd already made and we lined it up and it worked great for fishing out there! I think the gear ratio was awesome, but then again, when you have 300 yrds of 40lb out with an egg weight, it takes a few minutes to get it back in anyway. We used to tie a slip knot about 2' from the wheel and when we'd go check our line, we could tell if something had hit it by if the knot was gone or still there. Just an idea. Tight Lines!

The 330 you are talking about will do ok for snapper and stuff like that but if you want anything bigger you wont be able to keep them out of the platform with it. Those rods are really hard to keep a fish out of the rig with to. They are so short the want to flip to the side when you have a big fish. Send you a rod out on you boat and put a six ought on it. That will winch them off the bottom. I use 1/4 inch rope and some tubing and some cable to catch groupers off of my platform. Biggest one I caught was about 100 pounds.
