Went to the new BPS Sunday and the place was packed with people and neat stuff. I did however do something that I have not been able to do at Outcast or GB Bait & Tackle , I left without spending one red cent.

They have made a sporting goods store rival DisneyWorld , everywhere you look there are tons of "stuff" . Problem was that for the "near shore and slightly off shore " fishing that I do, they had less than I had hoped for. "some " moldcraft, Islander, no Black Bart , and few Yo-Zuri trolling lures.

I will say that it was fun and I am glad I went, but matching shirts and name tags do not replace the sarcastic snears and B.S that I've come to look foward to around here.

Nothing the CEO of BPS can do will come close to what Tommy H., Paul R. Chris P .,,, and the list goes on and on from A thru Joe Z. have done for years.

I am sure that I could have spent a lot there ,but I'll save it for next spring when I'll be FIRST in line AGAIN .

Good to know you like to keep your money with the local guys. I feel the same....The big box stores get enough....I hope everyone on here gets the message and helps to support our locally owned tackle shops.

Well I will chime in here a little as I do spend money at Outcast and Gulf Breeze Bait & Tackle...When a 5 pack of Owner circle hooks is $2 more with the locals, it does give me pause and most of the hangers are empty with no 7/0 or 8/0 sizes it will make you order online or go to the chain stores. This topic made me ponder, every reel and rod in my garage has been bought local but every time I went in the stores this summer they were out of tackle that I use to bottom fish...I'm just saying. Who do you inquir about when the next shipment is coming in? The kid behind the counter? THE best answer I got to when were the Owner hooks coming in was "We're out?" Tell the employees when that stuff is coming in...I'll be back then and not online ordering it. Or at the chain stores.

Rant off...I only say this 'cause I want the local guys to make it.

Its kind of like buying an off the rack suit vs a custom tailored one. Do I own a suit, well no but I like the feel of customed tailored service and yep,i've been drinkin a little. Myself and an unnamed forum member(we'll call this member Jeff to avoid confusion) visited the BSp on Sat. and the only thing they were missing was the Rat from Disneyland. Nice store I'll give them that but I don't like crowds when trying to purchase something, don't know what I wanted to buy, heck maybe just a visor(Huh Jeff!) I'll do my fishing shopping in a place that will listen to my needs instead of trying to make the sale that lands them the title of fishing expert in their saltwater dept. BTW,the gator was good in their 90min. wait restaurant.

I've had the same trouble finding exactly what I need at bass pro. They have a broad range of fishing stuff, but its hard to find specific items.

The guys at Outcast have been very top notch !!! Each one of them has been very friendly and worked like they were on comission but did not try to make a sale. They just listened to me and made a suggestion.I like shopping there and will even pay a few bucks more for something there.

The problem you have should not be directed at Outcast, GBB&T, or Owner hooks. Since the new regulations went into effect Owner has sold so many circle hooks that alot of their hooks were on backorder. The material to make these hooks wasnt as easy to get this year as in the past. The guys at Owner have been doing everything in their power to get these hooks to the customers like Outcast and GBB&T. I have word that shipping will be better in the 09 year. You should have no problem finding everything you need at either one of these stores. Im the regional sales rep for Owner hooks so if you have any questions then please pm me.

The main reason I never shop at BPS is I don't get the "Oh hell, what does he want now" look when I walk in that I'm used to locally.

That and the closest one is an hour and change away.

Your not going to walk into Bass Pro Shops, pick out four (4) shimano rods, find the owner/manager and ask hem to give you a break since your buying four (4) of them and your a regular customer. I asked Tommy this exact thing year before last and he told the kid behind the counter to knock off 20%. Will he do it every time, doubt it. But I promise your big box store ain't coming of the price. Something to be said about shopping with your local home grown talent and folks you fish with or against on weekends.

Local retailer will likely cost more, but in the long run, most of the time, you get what you pay for. My $0.02

i stopped going to the one in destin for that exact same reason. however, i may buy my rods and reels at the local places but i order my tackle online. as much as we spend in a tourney season we have to save $ wherever we can.

Yes I have gone into the Local store (In my case read OutCast) and found that they were out of something...BUT everytime I talked to someone (Be that Tommy, Anthony, Coach or even Willie Joe). They might not have known when it was coming in but they took my number and then called when it did. Anthony has twice now ordered something for me, called when it arrived, and I did not have to pre-paid to get it ordered. That service made it worth the wait.

And BTW...when was the last time you got up a 3AM to go get it line to spend twice what you told your wife you were going to spend AND get a free meal to boot. I know I have seen alot of your faces down there over the years.

I will stick with J&M and SAMs in OB. The staff at both places are very knowledgable, and will take you all over the store and put together exactly what you need.Better yet they will remember you the next time you come in ,and ask you how the lure worked.

I work here at Top Gun Tackle in Orange Beach so my opinion is obvious. BPS is like someone else said, the wal-mart of this industry. Of course the smaller locally owned shops do run out of stuff occasionally, we can't stock that stuff by the millions like these bigger companies do. It never takes more than a week or so to get whats needed and our shop, like most other local shops, are always happy to special order the desired items. Local shops can always give the best up to date advice on where, when and how as well as hands on rigging demonstrations and why certain gear is best suited for the type of fishing your doing. If I have a negative or defensive tone I apologize, but yesterday a guy came through the door and asked me everything in the world about surf and inshore fishing which like usual I was happy give him the proper advice and as I started to show him tackle he said " well we just bought all our tackle from Bass Pro but we needed to know how to fish".

While this man may have saved a few bucks getting the tackle he "needed" the advice you get from a local guy is priceless.

Boy you hit the nail on the head Tunapopper. I can't tell you how many times the same thing happened to me. Spend a ton of time with someone and they have already bought their gear somewhere else. The real kick in the pants is when you are the only guy in the store and you can't get to someone who actually may want to spend some money! Ah, the joys of retail in these times. To all the local tackle shops I would offer this suggestion though. Carry Owner hooks in the bulk pack like Half-Hitch in Destin and Panama City does. People will buy them I promise you. You might consider carrying Flourocarobon in the bulk 100 yard spools in all sizes. I know Outcast carries 50 and up but more people are using the lighter stuff these days. Other than that all the local tackle shops are great.

Let's see.....my truck gets about 14 mpg.  It is approximately 65 miles to BPS in Destin or 45 miles to BPS in Spanish Fort.  Let's say gas is running about $3.60/gallon.  That works out to somewhere between $12 and $17 worth of gas.  However, I routinely am driving by places like Outcast, Gone Fishin, Dizzy Lizzy's, GBBT, or, when I'm in O' Beach, places like Sam's or Top Gun.  I can save $$ and support our local shops by doing business with them.

Not to say that if I happen to be in Destin with my wife at the Outlet shops, I won't stray on over to BPS for the entertainment and random purchase.  I have also made trips over there with friends (car pooled) when a good sale was happening.

But as a rule, I say support our local guys.  Even if the individual prices of some items might cost a little more.

I went to BPS Monday night and had no problem walking out without spending a dime. I didn't see any deals. Everything I want/need is here and cheaper. Cool environment but I don't really need them.

If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way.

I appreciate all of the nice comments. We have been here for 21 years and with your support I hope we will be here for at least 21 more years. Brant hit it right on the Owner hooks, the outages were due to short supply of raw materials. I hope next year will be better. Pat I will make sure we get the smaller sizes of flourocarbon on the larger spools and also I will make sure we have the pro packs for all the popular Owner hooks. We are open to suggestions and if they make sense in this tougher than normal economic environment we will make it happen. We appreciate all of your business and we are here to help. Thanks. Good luck and tight lines.
