when snapper season closes i am going to be screwed. this is my first year offshore fishing and snapper is about the only thing i know how to catch i realise i am not going to get gps numbers so i am not goin to ask for them. but i was wondering if aj's were commonly found on public reefs. i stay in orange beach and leave out of perdido pass so i am looking for any advice i can get i have had limited success with kings but i still looking for help there also. at night i can see what i think is an oil rig could this be true and if it is, is it worth fisihing.

STILL TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT

I don't know where you are located but here in Destin, the flounder migrate to the Gulf at about the same time that Snapper season closes.......  Later still, grouper might move into shallower water and the bay.....

So, IMHO, the end of snapper season is not my reason to stop fishing.....  I never do....

The more I learn about women, the more i love my boat.

Not sure what public wrecks are out over that way but we've caught plenty on public wrecks out of pensacola.  But they were a lot of smaller ones.  If you can get some live bait, drop it down on a carolina rig. You should see fish on the finder above the wreck.  Drop it down about that far.  If there are some legal ajs you should get them.

GROUPER? I didnt know they came into shallow water how deep do you have to be to catch grouper i thought it was pretty deep I am fishing the public tanks 20 or so miles out any where from 85 to 100 feet deep, but back to the aj's i have learned on here that they stay around verticle structure i wouldnt think tanks would be verticle enough for them is this correct or not and are jigs the best way to catch them or would live bait be a good way.

For aj's, the williamson jigs are great to use. A little cheaper route would be to use a lazertail on a big 6oz. jig head.

There are tons of black snappers around here so they should be on those army tanks also. No season on them and five per person limit so if you target them you should be able to put some in the cooler. Just take whatever you can scrounge up for chum, menhaden northern mackeral etc. and anchor upcurrent and chum the fish up. Fifteen to Twenty pound flourocarbon, small circle hooks with no sinker and you should do good. Drop a sabiki rig down for whatever live bait is on the tanks and just freeline them for the AJ's. The army tanks over here hold a lot of juvenile jacks but you will get an occaisional keeper with a large live bait. Who's to say you won't catch a grouper around those tanks with a large live or butterflied bait soaking on the bottom.

There are tons of rigs from about the mouth of Mobile Bay west.  Off Ft Morgan you can see them at night and they look like shrimp boats they are so numerous.  Just head sw about 8 miles and you should see them.  The numbers are on public charts.  Not sure about fish though.  I assume they have some but I also assume they get hit hard by the fisherman.

Grouper in shallow water?   YEP!  I caught 2 in less than 10ft water in the keys back in June and a few weeks ago, 3 of us caught about 75-100 in 55ft of water on some concrete rubble.  We wer so tired of catching then that every time we would hook up on one, we sould "AH DAMN, another grouper"  It was commical.  But we really were tired of catching them.

also second on the williamson jigs, the benthos ones fluter on the way down also, I like the 3.5 and 5oz ones, they will give hours of enjoyment for ajs, kings, bonitos. will catch other stuff but this is what i usually catch on them, caught some triggers and snappers on the bass pro nock off ones 2 oz jigs, kinda snaches the trigs when they hit it. warning..... the jig fishing is very addicting. I usually now play with my jig rod set up 75% of the time now when its deep enough for the ajs.  i usually just catch and release also(mainly because there always short!!! hehehe)  just alot of fun with those light weight jig rods out.  I usually use pink or chartruse in the williamson, i dont really think it matters with those three fish though, heck any thing that eats a lazer tail grub will hit anything!!! but the jigs really get them going with all the action, spanks the heck out of live bait for the ajs when you just want to have sheer fun and action. good luck.

for got to say. the faster speed reels makes a big difference, so if you dont have a fast reel(mine is a torium 20) use atleast a spinning reel so it will fly through the water.  made a hugh differece on kings and bonito(used to have a 3-1 reel on it..i am poor!)

you can get a view of what were talking about on cabellas or bass pro shops catalages on line.  locally in pensacola, I know acadamy has them in fair selection, the boaters world on 9th ave also had alot the last time in there and they weren't over priced.  Outcast didn't appear to stock them anymore when I last asked about them, but there also a Shimano rep so there may be a conflict of interest or something I really dont know, but they have all the shimano stuff and always worth stopping in.(very nice local buisness, support the local guy if you can is my opinion)

warning... outcast has all the shimano jigging stuff.....you wallet could be in danger, hehe.  I have a trevelly rod that 30-80lb test range and a torium 20 with 50lb braid.  the rod is life time warrenty.. and it is true because i have managed to break it and they took care of it for me

yes there are rigs to the southwest of perdido pass (about a 15 mile run). yes, rigs hold kings and aj's. slow troll live hard tails around the rigs for kings and use the williamson jigs or live baits on the rig legs for aj's. if you decide to slow troll around the rig, pay attention to your bottom machine. a lot of the time you will find huge sub surface schools of bait and aj's.  good luck.
