Hey guys, I have been out on my 17ft Proline a few times this season only to come back with Kings. I am just tired of catching Kings and I want a better tasting fish. I have anchored out at Bridge Rubble and just got Red Lips. I have been trolling Dusters with dead Cigs behind the Dusters. On the bottom I have been using live pinfish with no luck and some squid but only coming up with the red lips on the squid. I am not scared to take my boat farther offshore, I have all the proper equipment and a trustworthy engine. So the question is... How far out do I need to go to troll for Dolphin and with what rig and also where is a close by location for some snapper, grouper and AJs and with what rig and bait. I have a lot of public locations on my GPS but I am concered that they are fished out. Is that true?

Hey I wouldnt complain to much, at least you can go fishing when you want too.  Money is so tight on this side of things, that I havent even put the boat in the water yet this year.  We just cant afford it.  I have gone speck fishing a few times wading through the grass flats but either the weather or the tide is against me when I go.  Just say a little prayer thanking god that you are able and in luck to go fishing when you would like too.

I would suggest you do some searches on here to see what you can find about the certain fish that you are interested in catching.

Go to some of the lesser used wrecks and try freelining with cigar minnows.  Be sure to use chum to bring the snappers up from the bottom.  I usually works for me when nothing else will.

Do a search of the forum for dolphin lures. It was brought up recently in the bluwater section I believe. Pretty much an illander/ballyhoo combo gets the nod. How much fuel does your boat hold? Do you have a VHF, GPS, and someone to file a float plan with? If your boat holds enough fuel and you have all the other things I just asked about, then the edge shouldn't be a problem. Search the Fourm or MBT Divers web page for numbers for the edge and go fish it. Watch your bottom machine and you will pick up bottom spots while trolling for dolphin. With dolphin, anything out of the ordinary could be holding them, NO MATTER HOW SMALL! If you see some debris floating, check it out. It never hurts to check. Troll around it first, then jig it if it's holding bait or signs of life. Look for weedlines, color changes, or any kind of debris. MOST IMPORTANTLY, and I can't stress this enough...bring me some fillets, so that I can, uh, test them, umm, to make sure they don't have, uh, red gill poisoning. Yeah, that's it...

Good luck!!

Bob

it shouldn't be so hard, its ussually the very little things that make or break the deal....if your fishing for snapper with 50# line leader you ain't going to have luck, use 30# floracarbon leader 3-4' minimum.  grouper.....  good luck i have small boat and havn't had any luck going where i normally go.  I use a chum churn on alot of recks and chum the fish up.  you can usually see them swimming behind the boat in a short time if the water is calm enough and you are wearing you polarized glasses.  just free line a piece of cut bait, no wieght and use a 30-20# flora leader and you will fish and you can watch them eat it.  If you got a net buyou tahar got plenty of menhaden the use for chum and cut bait.

for ajs.... just go get some 5-7oz williamson jigs yellow or pink is my favorites and you will tear up ajs in 100' or deeper.  if you use the 3.5oz ones the bonito will hit them also.

Im not a pro by far but usually have alot of fun by jigging and chumming.  If the red snapper dont bite usually the mangro snapper will bite.  also set you up a 2 hook rig with small #2 circles and use it some. get alot of trigs and mingo snapper. that rig always gets something.  use squid on it.  hope this helps

just to add i go no further than 20 miles and usually fish 15miles or less and all i have is public #'s off of escambia county site and mtb.  just to say though if your wreck fishing. YOU HAVE TO BE ON THE RECK.  10' off and your completely out of luck. cant stress this enough.

All good tips above. Your in the right area for other bottom species. The kings are thick in that area this time of year, so if your trolling you can count on those and bonito. Switch up your lures, try some other top water stuff for dolphin. When trolling watch your bottom machine for returns. If something pops up mark it, after 6 or so in the area. Pull up your trollers and check each spot you marked. Drop a rig down with cigar minnows and a small piece of squid on the hook. This will yield snapper! Good luck.
