My dad and I are new to blue water fishing.  We got the boat and starting to get the gear.  Still fishing small reels compared to most of you (30W Tiagras are biggest).  Headed out Sat 6/14 to try and run to the Nipple for some deepwater action.  Our goal was to catch a wahoo or at least a few dolphin.  As usual, no luck at all.  Headed out of the Pcola Pass at 7 AM and got to fishing around 9.  Put out the kitchen sink (in our case)...blue/white islander with ballyhoo and yozuri bonita on the corners with a stretch 25 and williamson soft artificial naked ballyhoo on the rigger.  After nada in 30 min decided to go to what everyone seems to say is the goto type rigs with two ballyhoo islanders on the riggers with two yozuri bonitas (orage/balck and purple/black) on the corners in tight behind the prop wash.  After another hour of pulling between the 300 and 500 foot depth lines, we never saw a bite and never saw blue water.  It was green but did see a weedline in around 10-15 mile mark on the way out.  Decided to head in closer to pull some spoons and see if a king would hit or maybe catch some snapper for dinner.  On the way the storm rolled off the coast between the bama and pcola pass.  Saw it coming and decided to run west behind it and then on in.  Got on the lift at 1:30pm with nothing but ice, bait, and a nice fuel bill.  Read where the water was better 10 more miles out.  Wish we would've known that when we were out there.  Anyone wanting to help some blind mice increase our productivity are welcome to write me.  I feel like we have the boat and gear (25 foot WACC Robalo with twin 150 Yam).  Now we need a brain.  Maybe next time we will break our dought.  We were gonna name the boat Chomp Chomp in honor of my 3 year old's favorite fish name (he calls shark that) but feeling like Chump Chump may be more appropriate until we at least catch a little tunny or some such.

Get a Hiltons account to tell where the blue water is. It's not perfect, but it's better than a shot in the dark. Also, http://www.florida-offshore.com (reelfinatical on this forum runs it) has some pretty good maps and info for tracking down the bluewater for free.
