Set up about 1/4 mile east of Portofino. Lines in around 7:45. Lots of folks out there this morning. Found a seemingly calm spot in the surf which I guessed meant deeper water and put two lines out. 3oz pyramid with 2 hook setup. Peeled fresh shrimp and gulp new penny sand fleas on both lines. Ended the day at 11:00 with four very small sandbar sharks and one ladyfish. Kind of a bust for my first attempt at pomp fishing.  didn't see much action from the folks immediatly around me. Guess it was kind of a slow day out there.

Here's where the questions start. Figured that a calm spot between breaking waves means deep water. Is this accurate? Is there any other features in the water that I should be looking for?

Using 8 foot cobia rods with 706z's. Will an average pomp put a decent bow in the rod when they strike? I watched the rod tips dance around a little bit but figured it was the wave action causing it. When the sandbar sharks hit there was a noticable dip in the rod. Should I switch to a faster action or lighter action rod to detect strikes better? Keep in mind this was my first go round pomp fishing and have never seen one strike.

Was wading out and casting. Could not quite get past the second sandbar. Should I move to four ounce lead? Switch to a longer rod? 706z's spooled with 20# test mono for cobia season. Should I move to a lighter line?

Sorry for all the questions. Any and all help would be appriciated. All in all it was a beautiful morning on the beach.

Thos rods should work fine. Yes a calm spot usually means deeper water and is a good place to try.  When a pomp hits the rod will bounce pretty good or it will go completely slack which means the fish is coming to the beach.  YOu will notice the bite.

Past the second sandbar ? That's a pretty good ways out if we are talking about the same sandbars. Put it in the trough between the two bars.

Your tackle is fine.  For longer casting you could down scale you line to 12-15# test.  For the pomps. look for rips or washout where the water is moving away form the beach (south).  Also, the most important varaible in the pomp equation is tidal movement, the stronger the tide the better.  Monday through Friday this week we will have some very good conditions for beach fishing.  High tide in the mid. morning starting on Monday and bumping up about 45mins each day.  Get the closest reference  (for your tides)for you fishing grounds and be fishing 2-3 hrs. before the high tide.  As far as where to cast, look for the dark green (deeper) water in the washout.

If there is not a good show of pomps this week I will be very surprised.

Good luck and tight lines.
