Anybody wonder what big fish are being shot around this area here are a few. I had the privilege of bringing the RIVERS EDGE PRO STAFF BOWFISHING TEAM out this past week for a bowfishing dvd and had a pretty good success at doing so. we had a great time in shooting some monster fish. I dont have all the pictures yet off the cameras and not all emailed back to me but here are a few. some of the rays were 70-90 lbs. We shot three over 100lbs and one was a new record. The one outside gulf breeze bait and tackle was a new bowfishing WORLD RECORD. 137.9lbs. The sharks we shot off alabama were some nice ones. One was a bull at 125 lbs a couple of black tips at 90-70 lbs and alot of barracudas off the wrecks. . All in all it was a great time and cant wait to do it again. also anybody who would like to make a trip out this is the time to do so. The Fishing is really good. Generator Box

While these small 2000 watt generators are pretty quiet. I've long been wanting to see if I can get it quieter yet.

I've been thinking of building a Generator box for a while. Just now got around to building it. It has no fasteners to hold it together. This is stitch & Glue style building, but in this case it's clamp and glue.

The panels are cut and the inside of the panels are covered with 6oz glass and epoxy resign. This makes it much easier and cleaner than putting the box together and then glassing down inside the box. The same thing applies to building a Stitch & Glue boat.

Now I have a box that is sealed and can't get inside it. The router with a round over bit [Bullnose bit] was used on all the corners. This makes the glass conform easier and stops the wood from splintering.

Can I set up this boat for Gigging???

Hey guys I would like to see what you think about using this boat for gigging? I do some shallow water fishing now, and fish a lot in the bay. I would like to start tring to go gigging. I know it's not the ideal boat for it, but do you think I could make it work? If so how should I set it up? It's 18' with 90 Yamaha, 80 lbs trolling motor. I have gotten into a little less than 1' of water before. I love fried flounder and would dam sure like to start catching some! Thanks for the info.

Flounder Rig

Since the forum is a little slow, let me take this time to solicit you guys for advice. I'm currently in the planning stages of setting up a new flounder rig. I'm looking to buy a welded jon boat in the 16-18' range with a bottom width somewhere between 50-60" and complete it with a standing platform and lights. I'm leaning towards a Honda gene. with HPS lights. I've looked at Weld-Crafts, Alumacrafts, South Forks, Sea Arks, Lowes, Grizzleys, Fishers, Kenners, etc. I've decided that they all make great boats but I'm unsure which would make the best start to a rig. SO...what advice can you guys offer on which brand boat is best in your opinion and/or any other knowledge you guys have picked up in setting up your own rigs. thanks and keep it civil. Oh, and I know that a tricked out boat is not necessary to killing fish and in fact won't help you if you lack basic floundering skills but I just finished up my MBA w/ a concentration in accounting and will be starting to work on Sept 2. with a CPA firm as a staff accountant so the boat is a present to myself for finishing school and finding a job!:letsdrink

I have Flounder gigged many years ago when I worked in Hilliard, Fl. (just west of Fernadena Beach). Back then there was no size limit on them and I don't remember if there was a creel (1975). So my question to those that do gig is how do you know that they will make the size limit BEFORE you stab them. Is it a WAG?

My buddy caught this monstrosity in the Jacksonville area at Nassau Inlet. This guy tipped the scales at 12.5 lbs. I don't know what the measurements were but I know they caught him on a big finger mullet on a sliding sinker rig. These Doormats stack up at all the inlets on the east coast, Sebastian Inlet being the most popular. I have seen some pushing 14 lbs caught right next to me. The Snook also get people going crazy like they do here during Cobia season.I haven't heard to much of people gigging for flounder over there. I don't think they hang out in the shallows as much.

Me and my brother have tried gigging a few times but with little luck. We stayed all night one time and only gigged two that were barely legal. We went around avalon bridge near indian bayou and we tried in a foot of water to about three foot of water with the same result. Anyone have any tips you might could give us about where to go or how deep of water to try in? Thanks in advance....:clap:clap

8/19 Giggin report with Flounder Assassin and Midnight Rider

Left out with Flounder Assassin around 7:00 p.m. on tuesday night to try and kill a couple fish. Midnight Rider was following behind us. We met Generator Man at the boat ramp. He was riding with Midnight Rider. Weather was great and we had a nice view of some heat lighting off to the north. Visibility was not as good as we hoped for but could have been alot worse. First spot we hit we were able to kill a nice flattie. We continued on for about 3.5 hours totalling 9 flounder in our boat and G-man and Midnight Rider put three in there boat. Generator Man wanted to catch one by hand I think cause we got a report from MR that he was off the boat in the water not sure if his gig was broken but either way he went for a swim.

3 of them were pretty heavy.

My little Health Inspector making sure I had proper equipment before I started cleaning.

Thanks again to Flounder Assassin for letting me ride along with him, I had a great time and am looking forward to the next trip.

8/20 Gigging

Well I have now tried both metal halides and High pressure sodium lights and there is quite a bit of difference between the two. But if you are looking for the fish to just jump out and say "You got me" you will be disappointed in both!! The bowfishing website makes it seem like the fish will GLOW in the lights and this is just not the case. The HPS lights do cut down on the glare but if there are no fish there to start with, you ain't gonna see them with any light. Do they give you a slight advantage? Yes, but $400 worth? I think not! I have realized that floundering takes WAY more knowledge of WHERE the fish are and WHEN they will be there. You can spend all the money you want on generators and lights and still not gig SHIT!!!(as I have learned). So, if you are looking to gain a distinct advantage over the conventional giggers (DFA, midnight rider and some others) you are going to be disappointed if you don't know the patterns to follow. Just having the lights don't make them jump in the boat, believe me, I know!! Just my $.02 worth...............

Just moved from Navarre to Destin this past weekend and decided to check out some of the bayous for possible hunting grounds , I came across a little parking area and a small pier hidden from the road. Water was pretty dark and lots of finger mullet getting spooked. There was an older guy fishing there with live pinfish with no action. I decide to cast a few times for some trout as the sun went down. I tied on a 1/8 ounce D.O.A jig head (red) with a D.O.A Shad (root beer w/chartreuse paddle tail). After a few casts I bowed up and pulled in a fat 18 inch flounder. Pics are poor quality-taken with camera phone.

I think I will check this area out by boat this weekend. He's gotta have some brothers and sisters waiting to get their gills pierced.

I spent a little time dialing in my brackets today.

I started with a piece of flat 5000 series alum 1/4in X 2in X 24in.

I carried it over to a buddy of mine and used his break to put the 90deg bends in them. I knew they would be a little tall and planned to dial them in. I ended up cutting off 2 1/2in on each upright piece and radiusing the pieces off. No just hacked off pieces here. :(

The halogen lights that were on the boat each had a push button ON/OFF switch mounted on them. They have a neat little grommet that covers the wires and the machine screws that hold the little box on. I removed some of the guts in the HPS lights so I could get a good look inside as to where I could mount this switch box. I rerouted the wiring out of the factory HPS mount and removed that mount. The round hole will be plugged with a 3/4in plastic or rubber plug that is available at a hardware store.

I found the right spot just below the transformer and drilled and tapped the housing with 8/32in threads and mounted the switch box.

The brackets will not allow enough down angle that I like [30deg.] I fabbed up some short pieces of #2 Yellow Pine and encapulated them with epoxy. I will paint them to match my platform. These pieces were cut on a 30deg angle and the alum "U" bracket will mount on top of them and be thru bolted.

The 1st one always takes more time to work out. Now that I have it the way I want it. The next 3 will go much faster.

Don't post very often but felt compelled to do so. Hope that the guilty ones will read this.This is written to the two gentlemen or two boneheads(you decide), that were gigging, just inside the mouth of perido river in the aluminum boat last night (Sat.8/9/08) running 4 halogens and a generator @10:30 p.m. approx. on ala. side and then proceeded to move to the florida side and started directly in front of me (200yds).You could have showed a little more tact and started behind me or moved further down towards the mouth. As it was just us two boats and we had the place to ourselfs. I could've understood this happening someplace like ft. pickens with a larger crowd. Some people just don't CARE and some people just don't think. Hope it was just the latter one and you had a great night and gigged yall's limit .Just be aware that next time I will do unto you as you have done to me, AND THAT IS SHOWING NO RESPECT!

Navarre Bridge

Went and checked out some areas west of the Navarre Bridge
and didn't see any flounder but did see a speck pushin' 30 inches.
We wanted to stick him pretty bad but I did the right thing and
reached for my Penn Sargus 5000 and before I can make a cast
he's out like a trout. After a few minutes of cussing each other out
for spookin' the trout we decide to hit some lighted docks. We ended
up with only 1 15 inch speck but we caught like 20-25 White Trout.

Went again Saturday night 8/9 at Joe's Bayou in destin. Saw a couple
Reds and chased some schools of mullet but again I did not even see
any small flounder. Am I just having bad luck or am I in the wrong areas?

Lighting question

Have any of yall tried to change the color of your lens on the metal halide or halogen fixtures? I know the HPS fixtures put out more of a yellow colored light while the MH or halogens are more of a white light. Is this the reason they possibly cut the murkier water better (yellow colored light)? Kind of like using amber lensed glasses.

Do yall remember the guy a few months back that was bitching about flounder giggers destroying the grass beds in Navy Point???? He was saying he owned somthing like 40ft out into the water and that the water was deeded to him and his neighbors when they bought the property. I think I met the A-Hole last night. I went to Navy Point to try it out cause the north wind had my favorite spot ruff as a cobb. There I was just minding my own business crusing down the beach. Up ahead I see a guy sitting on the end of a pier. I holler down to him "are you fishing" cause if so I would troll out and around his pier. Decent thing to do. Any way he dosent respond so as I get a little closer I holler to him again. Still no answer so I go ahead and start to swing out to give him space cause I cant tell if he has a pole out. When I get out in front if his pier I see he is not fishing so I cut the trolling motor hard to head back to the beach to come in beside his pier. When I get up next to his pier I said "I thought you might have been fishing! mind if I play through", (just making small talk). His response to me was. "Dont Destroy (MY) Grass Beds. I Have Spent A Lot Of Money Restoring Them. I Own This Water All The Way Out To The End Of My Pier" As soon as those words came out of his mouth I started having flashbacks of the guy who was complaining on here a few months back. I said to the guy "your the dude who was :babycrying:baby on the PFF" and he started to studder a little and I kept after him it was you wasn't it it sounds just like you. He never would own up to it but he shut up. If it wasnt him then im a monkeys uncle. As I wnet on my way he surpervised my activity to make sure there was no grass floating up in my prop wash from my trolloing motor. I was going to add his original post to this but gave up on looking for it. Edit Edit.... I found his original post. His name was Bayouboy Extra..... dont no what the exra stands for but I couldnt figure out how to add his original to this thread.... It was a good read though. Halogens vs. HPS's?

Curious to know if anyone has seen a difference with switching over to the HPS's when the water is clear and when its murky. I have underwater 12v lights right now and am buying my Halogens to re-rig our boat. Most of the time our water is murky in our bay and was curious if you guys using the HPS's now could say if they are better all around or worse when its murky. Plus, whats the difference in the glare on the water? Thanks!

My girlfriend and I went Fri. night and had a pretty good night. Fought the wind (10-15 mph) and the crowd (5 other boats at one point) to come up with 18 fish. (two 22" fish and one 20" fish included) Put the boat on the trailer at 3:45 so I feel like if we would have toughed it out we would have killed our limit but my copilot was sleepy and we had more than enough so we loaded up. It was only my girlfriend's third trip so I let her do most of the gigging and I am proud to report that no fish got away!! Also, possibly the neatest part is a fish that had a half-moon bite mark taken out of his side that is the size of a baseball!

Popped a limit last night

Took my little 14' jon out to San Luis Pass last night and beached it in the middle of the bay at Bird Island.

Fish everywhere, could had limited out in 15 minutes but the gigging has been so good that I am only taking the ones that to me, would look good on the filet table.

Long story short...10 fish limit. All fish between 18 and 21 inches.

What month will the Flounder migrate?

I've pretty much missed out on the floundering lately due to trying to re-rig our boat. I'm hoping to at least get a chance or two this fall but we only have a 15' jon boat. I'm hoping we won't miss the run when they evacuate, LOL! Hoping to get a tip or two so we can hopefully be ready. We won't be hitting the passes or jetties. I grew up sticking them in the Gulf, so we are still green on the boat method. BTW, we love it and are hooked!

Hey I was just wondering if anyone could tell me when the flounder are coming or going to the rivers and out of the rivers.....New to the game so I know no one can tell me exact honey holes but anyone wanna give me a general area to start this exploration???Thanks for any help!!!

I like to try new receipes every now and then for cooking flounder but most of the time am disapointed on how they turn out. To me if it aint fried flounder fillets then it aint no good. How are some of the ways you like to eat flounder. what is your favorite way to prepare/eat flounder?
