Saturday Report

Got out early this morning. Fleas are still plentiful. Caught 5 Pompano. The largest at 17 1/2 inches. Going again in the A.M. If anyone wants to join me just holler.I'll check PM's later.Sorry for the short report.I have a ton of stuff to get done today.

Went in the afternoon hoping for the best. The seas were flat with the occasional ripple.

The slime was rolling in from the east but if I waded out then I could cast past the band that was there.

I caught a few baby pompano on squid and shrimp plus a few catfish and a baby cravelle.

No keepers but I had cold beer and a camera so I was occupied. I was there for about 3 hours and was busy enough reeling in the babies.

Going fishing on Pensacola beach anything ?

Ft. Morgan Surf Fishing

Some of the best memories I have of my childhood is of redfishing trips at Ft. Morgan. The past two weeks I've made the journey with my daughter and two nephews so that they could make memories of their own. We did well fishing and got to see some beautiful sights. I hope you enjoy the pic's. Oh, by the way, in two trips we caught 11 bull reds. Three of them 37" and the rest were 30". We also caught two blues and a sail cat.

Got up bright and early and headed to the beach with fresh shrimp. Raked some fleas and got the lines in the water at about 630. This is what we got...........

About mid morning friend called, said he caught a 22" king @ NB. man I just wanted to wet a line bad....Had two hrs. to spare. Had my kite with me....perfect north winds. Put a small fat mullet on a king rig and sent it way out... not even 5 mnts...bam....quick run not like a king though....man!!! very excited to see what it was.....huge %$# remora.:banghead Re- rigged sent it back out (finger mullet again) nothing. Oh well , had to head back. Came back in the pm...wind out of the south this time..water is crystal clear, fleas are thick still. Managed two pompanos, one at 17" the other at 14... sorry no pics... going back in the am.

Seaside/Grayton Beach area

I was over at Seaside this weekend and looking around the beaches. I noticed some nice looking spots and was wondering if anyone here has fished the beach over there at all. I noticed that halfway to low tide the sand bars are almost completely exposed and you can walk out to the deep drop-offs in ankle to knee-deep water. Any body fished there?

We fished the gulf near chicken bone last night and landed 2 black tips, one about 3ft and the other about 4 1/2ft. We also had another cut 135lb cable clean before we even got to the rod. We only fished about and hour and a half so we had a pretty decent night.

Destin Crystal Beach 9-28-2008

Went down to the beach this morning around sunrise, put out 2 rods with fresh shrimp from Sexton's (Kinda expensive now, lowest is $5.95/lb with heads on). No bites at all and something kept getting my bait. Seas were pretty much calm, no surf much.

Tried raking for some fleas, there are some small isolated ones where the waves break and wash up on the sand. Did see one colony, made up of mostly females with eggs.

They really didn't help any, not even a bite on them either. Ended up letting them all free. It was real calm, another fellow was fishing just east of me, didnt see him get anything either.

Neighbor got a Whiting yesterday and I got one last week, that is about it.

Have heard everyone is catching Pompano on the pier and in Pensacola but nothing in Crystal Beach yet. Anyone else having any luck?

I was able to get out to the beach for the first time since the cooler weather has started. The water was GLASS, so I spent a little time trying to find water with a little more depth. After setting up I began raking fleas for bait. I was mostly getting little ones so I scaled my tackle back to match. Lines in by 6:45. I was fishing a large area of slightly deeper water that went from 30 to 100 yards out before it rose into shallower depths. I staggered my rods with one on the near drop, one in the middle, and one long rod on the far drop off. On the long rod I got 1 short pompano, and 1 legal pomp(13.5"). The middle and short rods were a mix of small whiting, crabs and ladyfish. Around 8:30 I moved down the beach to another area with a more distinct drop closer to shore. I fished 1 rod shallow of the drop, 1 on the deep edge, and one long rod out further. The rod on the deep edge of the drop netted another 2 pomps, 1 just short and a 13 incher. I stayed until 10 before heading home. All fish were released-just wanted to see if they're in yet. It was a beautiful morning, so head out there if you can. Even if there's no wave action, just spend a little time scouting and you'll find fish. Oh, and bring bug spray-the biting flies were out in force. Tight lines.

I know i don't post much but I live close to birmingham so I really don't have anything to post but I just got back from gulf shores, stayed on the west beach all week I caught alot redfish,whiteing from the beach and I caught 2 pompano the first pompanos I have ever caught at gulf shores also caught 2 Spanish Mackerel from the little lagoon and a few Speckled Trout most of the specks were to small to keep I was using peeled shimp on the beach I saw hundreds of small sand fleas but they were to small to fish with

Got to the beach around 6:30 am. I found a good wash and put 2 rods out.Caught 7 catfish right away and then the first red. Then the second red on the other rod while I was putting a sandflea back on the first rod. The redfish were hitting so well I could only fish one rod and I rarely even got to put the rod in the sandspike before I would get another. All in all I caught around 70 of them. (I stopped counting at 54). All fish were caught on sandfleas and were between 17 and 30 inches. I kept a couple and the rest were released.

Black drum 2

Redfish ??? alot

And 1 seagull realeased unharmed.

My Personal Best Surf Trip Ever.......With a HUGE Bonus

I went to bed last night in Panama City Beach,"and woke up there this morning. I got up and after a couple of cups of Java, I picked up a 6# rod and a few pomp jigs and walked down the beach toward the jetties. Late yesterday evening, I caught a redfish in a washout right behind the MoonSpinner Condos and as I approached that same area I slowed down to look for anything that might be moving around. A pelican came down the beach just barely over the water and as he passed the washout a pompano skipped across the surface of the water. I walked out to the sandbar which was almost dry and made a long cast out the washout. As I bounced the jig back, I didn't get touched until the jig got about 40 feet or so from me, and BAM, a small pompano, and on the first cast. I cast again, alot shorter cast too, instant hookup. Most were short and there may have been a few borderliners, but not big enough to keep, before work. The only thing that could have made it better would have been for LITECATCH to have been there with me.

I stood in the same spot and caught 25, not every cast but not far between either. I have never caught Pompano like that in my life. The only thing I have ever caught like that is Hardtails. I set a limit that I would quit at 50, and before I got to 30 an elder gentleman and his grandson who had been watching me from the balcony of the Condo they were staying in walked down the beach and yelled out to me "what are you catchin?" I yelled back "Pompano, come here, and bring the little boy". He and the little boy made their way out to the sandbar, which for all practical purposes was an Island. I had just landed my 28th when they got to me, and I showed them the fish which was short as most of them were and he thought that was the coolest thing he had ever seen. I cast the jig and handed him the rod and and told him what to do, he bounced the jig no more than 5 times and doubled over. I helped him land the fish and his grandson released it. We did it again, and again, and again, and again. I quit counting when he and his grandson started fishing but I know we topped 40 between us, all sharing one rod. It was a blast watching the granddad and his grandson both. They had an absolute Ball. When we walked back to the beach, granddaddy got really wet as he slipped in the trough between the bar and the beach. I helped him up and asked if he were o.k. and he replied he had never been better, and that he and the grandson were about to go to the tackle store and would be back very shortly.

The HUGE Bonus was the thrill and delight of the two of them having a HUGE time that that little boy will remember for the rest of his life.

That is my greatest Surf fishing Trip ever..To date.

Well, thanks to all who gave advice and tips. It has been a great vacation.

Me and the wife just got finished eating two pompano that we caught this afternoon. YUM!

After the gulf settled down, the surf fishing has been great this week. We caught pomps, reds, sharks, whiting, lamprey, ladyfish, lizardfish, and I also had two rays (one in the surf, one at Big Lagoon) that I had to cut the line on (8 lb braid!) I probably caught 30-40 skipjacks, with many being rather large and giving good fight and flight. We went to Pensacola Beach pier yesterday, and I caught a 5 1/2 -6 foot blacktip on a 1oz. Gotcha! Got him up out of the water, and then cut the line. After Ike left the gulf, the fishing just got better and better. Hate that we are headed home tomorrow, back to trout in mountain rivers :(. We caught most everything on either 3" new penny Gulp shrimp or Gotchas, and caught the pompano on Gulp sandfleas. Here's a few pics. Tight lines!

actually three.... almost landed a 3rd one...it broke me off ...another 10 feet and it would've join the other two.. took off with my entire rig ...Lots of fleas. used the bigger ones in a #1 circle hook....could barely see the hook, fleas were huge..... lots of fun :clap

I was told I should post a fishing report...so here it is.

I walked down to the beach right before dark a couple of hours ago. Overcast, visibility was poor. Blindcast about 30 times. Caught 3 very small ladyfish, and one 15" appx. Redfish. All were legally caught and released unharmed. All were caught on a Connor Egghead Jig, white with speckled orange.

BTW, it is a real report and not made up at all.

It was good to be on the water.

Pensacola Beach surf fishing

So I'm thinking of heading out a little later today to see what I can get. I also have plenty of shark rigs and may pick up some bonita on the way. The only thing I do not have is a raft to paddle my bait out. I may pick up a cheap one on the way.

Has anyone been out east of Portofino this weekend?

Any luck/advice?

Went to cystal beach around 4:30. No pomps to be heard of. Sand fleas were few and far between but I could catch enough to fish with. Everytime I reeled in there were no fleas on my hooks...I think the crabs were getting them. Caught two cobia on the same rig!!! They ate right when the bait hit the water...they were both about 12-15 inches long...they were so cute...I hurried them back to the water and watched the swim down the beach a little. Also caught some skippies on a pompano jig. Great weather but still no pomps...it was flat as a lake out there...should have taken the yak...but i was a little tired from taking it the past two days.

[b]Altogether, the trip was a slow bite. The beach was pretty except for the weed. Driving is still easy with the beach hard packed. There was little bait in the surf. At Sunrise on Saturday, I went out in the kayak to troll for kings, jacks, and spanish. There was not action. No bait jumping, no birds, just quiet.

During this time Hen_Feen threw the cast net for an hour and produced one lone skipjack and a baby jack. Later I caught a 7" whiting and Jake got a sharpnose at sunset.

We ran out the rods with no strikes.

This seems to be a continuation of the slow conditions since the hurricane hit SPI. I fished PINS for three days on the first week of August with no strikes. A friend of mine did a four day trip on PINS the third week of August with no shark runs. This weekend we fished SPI ten miles south of PINS with no strikes. During early August, the water temps on PINS were in the low 70's, a real anomoly for August water temperature trends.

9-15-08 Old Crystal Beach Pier Destin

Had the day off so went down the street and see what I could get. Nothing. Surf has settled down some but still little rough. I need to start taking my big rod. Kept washing in the 4oz weight and couldnt get it out far enough with a small 7' rod. Still looking for the fall pompano run but nothing yet. Had a rain squall come through that cleared the beach, but only lasted 15 minutes. After that, beautiful day at the beach.

Croaker Run!

Went out past Portifino yesterday afternoon with no true target in mind. Just looking for something fishy and did I ever find it. Bird were diving all over the beach and as soon I got to the water I saw why. There were millions of 4-6in croakers working their way down the beach. The massive schools were trapped in a 4ft deep, 10ft wide trough in between the shore and a 6in deep sandbar. There was literally more fish than water in this trough and it was actually difficult to wade through. I wasn't wading through water, I was wading through fish. I had to physically push through the school. A guy next to me threw a small net and needed his buddy to come help him pull the 50lbs of fish.
I started out casting jigs and after I landed my share of ladies and blues I switched over to live baiting in hopes of something bigger. For the next hour the routine was standing on the sandbar, reaching down for a bait, casting it out and getting an immediate hookup of solid blues and ladys averaging 20-24in. I didn't even think of keeping track of the numbers and although nothing bigger showed up those fish were a blast on 8lb.

place to buy raft?

Old Crystal Beach Pier Destin

Thought I would go check out the surf fishing this morning, went to the Old Crystal Beach Pier (Pompano St) in Destin around 6:00am. Not too rough, but looks like we lost about 30 feet of beach. Used to be about 30 feet of beach in front of the old pilings, now they are in the water. Looked like the tide was coming in too.

This is what the old pier pilings looked like back in March of this year.

The current was pretty strong, all I had was 4oz pyramid sinkers which didnt hold at all, quickly washed ashore. Probaby need a heavier rod and at least 8 oz weight now if you go to hold it. The June grass was present also, would have thought it would be gone now. So, didn't stay long, try again tomorrow. Here are some random pics of the beach.

Is anyone catching any pompano in Orange beach area?

We've got whole ladyfish for bait, and we'll be running them out to the edge of the sandbar in a raft.

my brother and i have an inflatable raft we take out off the beach that we catch hardtails and float them on balloons for kings but today we were off johnson's beach and were in a big bait school trying to catch bait when somthin slaaaammmed my gotcha lure!! :hoppingmad:hoppingmad it was 40ft away from the raft and we were in 25ft of water and it jumped so i saw half of the fish bill and sail, but then it took off and my bait pole with 10lb test wasnt really a match......to bad it didnt hit the hardtail on the pole with 360yrds of 30#:banghead:banghead:banghead:banghead:banghead:banghead:banghead....sory no pics but we were on a raft for God sakes!! about an hour later we had a king sky on a spanish we had out for bait and bit through 60# leader looked to be a 40-50# class fish....people on shore thought it was a shark that jumped so it had some size to him so we went home with no fish:reallycrying:reallycrying:reallycrying:reallycrying but a good story!

Mission Accomplished:First Shark from the Surf

This is the first shark I have ever caught. I assume it is a Blacktip, but let me know otherwise. I caught him off the surf July 3rd at 6:15 AM at the Sandestin beach resort. Here is what I used/did to catch it.

850SSM Penn Spinning Reel 50 Lb. P Line braid

10 ft. Cabelas Salt Striker 2pc graphite rod 15-40lb test; 2-8oz lure weight

3 ft Malin 108lb wire leader with Gamakatsu 7/0 circle hook and 3oz pyramid sinker

frozen lady fish head caught from the day before; slightly thawed

waded out 30 yds during early morning high tide and casted out about 30 yards

Set drag loose, then let it take the bait, tighten drag and reeled in; 30 minute fight; grabbed him by the tail, pulled it to shore and had a family take this shot

Perfect hook placement in the side jaw; pulled hook than slung it back to the water

Shark was gone in a second; about the same rush as harvesting a deer

Awesome

I posted as much info as I could, since this is the website where I got alot of my info to catch this shark. I hope my luck will pass on to someone who hasn't done this yet. Can't wait to be back in Florida again.

I caught two large redfish with the same gear using frozen porgies from HalfHitch tackle the next day at the same spot. I will post pics when I get them.

Beach Sharkin' Navarre

Went out to Navarre Beach last night to try for some sharks, and got nothing but catfish on the small rods. So, I put about 1/2 a mullet on my big rod, walked way out there and flung it as far as I could. About 20min later I get a huge run, this thing would not stop no matter how much drag I used. After about 30 sec it spit a 12/0 circle hook. I think I would have got spooled anyway this thing was a frieght train. This has happened to me my last 2 times out, maybe 3rd time will be a charm!

Wasn't planning on becoming a member of the forum but have been reading it almost every day for the last few weeks to get ready for my trip to florida. Spent the first day out on the beach catching all small cats (probably 5 to 8 inchers). Went out this morning at about 7 and caught more small catfish for about an hour on frozen shrimp, then between 8 and 10, caught 4 ladyfish and lost two (they're good escape artists). Yes- I am just a tourist from nashville used to bass fishing in lakes, but I am having tons of fun on the surf. Hopefully I'll get some more on here later. And are ladyfish any good to eat? if so how are they best prepared.

My brother (Fishingaddict) and I went a little bit past Portifino to throw some lures out. When we got there, ladyfish and bluefish were feeding like crazy. There were a ton and every cast was a hookup.

While I was throwing a spoon out on my 8lb test, I hooked into a shark. Took a few minutes to bring in and was released to fight another day. He measured 42". Thankfully I didn't lose it due to the fact that I had a mono leader.

Our friend Wade (true-king) met up with us a little later and caught a few ladyfish.

All in all it was a fun time!

started caching bait around 2 pm. It started off real slow and didn't catch anything from shore. Fished some in the yak after paddling out a bait. Caught some hardtails, ladyfish, and a small flounder. Put the live ladyfish out and it got hit hard.

Spooled 300 yards of powerpro off my 309 in under a minute. It didnt help that one of the pins was lose and caused the gears to start grinding :banghead So once i saw the mono, my buddy and I jumped into the (single person) kayak, which was interesting enough in itself. Finally figured out what was wrong with the reel and fixed it past the second sandbar. The sharky continued to pull us down the beach about a half a mile. Got the shark in a stalemate for about 20 minutes, paddling and going nowhere fast. Finally got her ass tired and pulled her into shore about after about an hour of madness.

Much to my surprise it ended up being a fat, 5+ foot blacktip. The stinger broke off its mouth and had an 11/0 foul hooked in the top of the head. As i tried to revive it, my buddy ran down the beach to get the camera and some pliers while some tourists watched in amazement. Her gills were hardly moving, but were able to let her swim free after about 15mins.

Was an amazing fight! Had a great time but i dont think ill jump in a yak to save a spool of PP again. Missed about 4 or 5 others throughout the night. Also saw dozens of ladyfish sparking up the bioluminescence around 11pm. Was pretty creepy seeing all these flashes of blue around the yak, but none of them would hit any shrimp.

Still dying to hook up to something bigger than me....

Went just past the RV Turnaround, No Grass, One Jelly. Got one Ladyfish, Crabs were stealing bait like crazy.

Was curious if someone could tell me if the grass is bad for surf fishing this weekend? Was planning on fishing Johnson's Beach. Anyone been lately? How is the sea grass. Planning on kayaking some baits out for some sharks on Sunday if its worth it.

Destin Fishing Suggestions - Help!!

Will be vacationing in Destin in a week or so...... staying in a condo near Henderson State Park. Would greatly appreciate fishing suggestions in the area. I won't have access to a boat so probably have to be jetty or surf. Would really prefer to surf fish but not real particular about where I fish or what I catch... just looking for a good time. Planning on bringing 2-3 spinning rods .... 9 ft heavy action to 7 ft med/lt action. Thanks in advance for your help.
