Over thirty years ago, my dad and his best friend, Andy Bietenholz, taught me how to fish. Freshwater, rivers, inshore and offshore, they introduced me to it all. So when they ask me to take them fishing this morning, I was thrilled and thought this would be an excellent opportunity to return a favor that ultimately enhanced and brought so much joy to my life. I think it's a feeling that all anglers share. Little did I know, the day would also include a valuable lesson in trout technique.

It was cold. It was windy. It was ignored. It was GO time!!! Dropped the Maverick in at 6pm and arrived at the redfish area at first light. Water was way out, but managed to get 2 nice fish. Dark green Gulp! Jerkshads and 1/8oz. Johnson Gold Spoons did the trick. The redfish were tough because of the weather and Brant's dad put the hammer on them yesterday afternoon. I'm thankful they left us two!!

Traveled up river for some speckled trout fishing. Got some excellent information from "The Master", Brant Peacher. First stop, and the trout were thicker than I had ever seen. Almost every cast produced a legal trout. Second spot, same result, but these trout were bigger (18-24"). Actually had a few trout take drag!! Incredible. Also, got 2 (2#) striped bass and 2 small black bass.

My friend Andy does alot of trout fishing in the Port St. Joe and Apalachicola area. This time of year in the rivers, he uses a very small gold beetle spin with a 2" or 3" Gulp! Shrimp. He just lifted it slowly off the bottom every three seconds or so. Dark water, smelly bait, slow presentation, vibration; makes sense. Not only did this bait catch more trout, but it definitely caught bigger trout. They're still teaching after all these years.

Final count was 2 Redfish(23"), 2 Stripers(2lbs), 2 Black bass(1-2lbs) and I don't know how many trout. 50-60 fish would be a safe estimate. 10-15 undersided, 10 over 20" and the rest 15"-19". 5 fish were taken for dinner and the rest were released healthy.

Merry Christmas!!

The ramp he used appears to be where the old Nichol's Seafood restaurant was. It is off Robinson Point Rd which is N. of I-10 off Garcon Pt. Rd. There is also access S. of I-10. There should still be somewhat of a sign (Nichol's) and its about halfway between the N. @ S. entrances.

Over,
