| Need to know the secret to dropping the lower unit to access the water pump. The shift linkage is what I'm in the dark about. "HELP"

| I think there is a screw under the carb. The shift rod runs all the way up to just under the carb.

| There may also be a small window with two screws holding it in place that allows access to the shift rod. If that is the case then there will be two nuts visable. It is similar to a plumbing union and can be unscrewed to allow lower unit to drop. Be sure and use a #3 phillipshead to unscrew the access plate as the screw heads will strip out easily.

| Take care with that shift rod. There is a flare nut with a plastic coupling on it and if you lose it or damage it, you could be on the hunt for a new or used one. pm me if you want me to talk to you about it and I will give you my digits.
