| I'm no outboard expert, but i know that the outside of the lower unit should not be covered in a dark oily substance. See pic. I had not taken the boat out in about 8 months. I "always" burn the gas out when i return, but when i went to prep the boat this time i saw that the fuel line was attached and remembered that about 4 months ago we were getting ready to go, and the trip got cancelled at the last minute. Apparently I attached the fuel line and pumped it up when we were preparing to go and forgot to remove it when the trip went bust. Also, the fuel tank was almost empty and I now (post problems) vaugely recall it being almost full when I was going to take it out four month ago. I now assume that the gas evaporated and left the oil behind. When I was preping the boat this time, I did not think about the gas issue. I just mixed up a new batch of oil / gas mix and added it to the existing gas. I now think it was very rich mixture. Also, in a seperate issue, the steering cable was frozen, so I had to spend a half hour lubing it and pounding it with a hammer to break the cable loose. When I launched the boat, had a little trouble starting it. Started to try to run and it would barely go. Had to keep the choke out a little or it would die. Had to keep the choke out the entire time or it died. If i tried to accelerate to the full speed it would bog dow and try to die. The best speed I was able to get out of it was about 7 mph. I normally can get up to about 25 MPH. I have some thoughts of what could be wrong and obviously I made some mistakes, but i would apprecite any advice (other than, find a new hobby). Thanks, Fisherdad
Also see the pooled dark colored fuel that was visible when i tool the top off.

| Is it possible that the crankcase is full of oil, I have a old 15 HP motor that if the tank is left connected to the motor with the vent closed, The excessive tank pressure ( due to the hot sun ) will cause the motor to flood ad fill the crankcase with fuel and is pain in the butt to start. I would start by draing the carb to make sure it is not full of oil and start with new plugs and a test tank of fresh high grade gasoine W/ oil and see if it runs out clean and corrects the problem. Maybe one of the shops will chime in with a better recomendation.

Snagged Line said it well. Also, you may have some leftovers in the carb and may need to clean it. A single carb like that one is very easy to do. Take it off, blow some carb cleaner through the jets, put it on and go.

I would 2x check with Kenny before putting in 91 or 93 octane in the engine, if High grade gas means high octane.
I have been told other wise but not for sure if it is true. Something about the rings or pistons if I remember, but I'm no mech.

Most of the engines out there have been designed to run on 87 octane. Midgrade gives some benefits. High grade doesn't really help on the engines designed for 87. There are some you have to run high test, but not many. The midgrade has some additives for carbon build-up, but the high test additives do not have anything more that would do better for outboard two stroke engines. IMO high test is a waste of money when it comes to two stroke engines.

Thanks, It seems like it had to something to do with making the engine run hotter, like in NASCAR or some stuff. Didn't know for sure.

| I really wasn't thinking or even caring about the octane rating, I was thinking about the lower alcohol content (i may be wrong, but i think the 10 % ethinol crap is in the lower grade gas. My owners manual indicates that evenrure does not recomend the alchol mix ) Personally I piss a lot of people off with my opinion that I will not own anything that will not run on reguar unleaded gas. I pull up to the crap pump on my Harley Davidson and watch my buddies glare at me with discust while they pump their "Premium" dinasore blood into their skooters. I usually put premium gas and "Sea Foam" in somthing when I am trying to undo somthing bad that has happened.
