| Went out to the sound Wed. morning around 0700 (northside in Navarre around some docks). This was the first time I've tried to fish on an outgoing tide vs. incoming, and it definitely won't be the last. The water seemed a lot more active. I anchored up and waited after paddling to a spot and spooking a bunch of fish (didn't know they were there). They came back. Tossed a 5" new penny jerk shad out under a popping cork and immediately started getting bites, but no hookups. Checked the bait and saw that the tail had some cuts in it. So, I put a 3" new penny shrimp on and got a couple little specs. Moved about 100 yards to the east and got another little spec. I heard some noises and saw a swirl or 2 behind me, and cast back there once. Didn't think anything of it since I didn't get a nibble. Cast out in front and on the sides for a little bit and kept getting harrased by a 1 1/2 foot needle fish. He'd hang on the Gulp until he was next to the canoe and then he'd let go and swim away. I was about to move again when I decided to cast behind me again since I was still hearing stuff and saw couple more swirls in the water. Not a minute later and I had a good fight going. After a couple mins I realized my anchor came off the bottom and I was getting dragged around a little. Didn't plan on keeping anything, but he was gut-hooked. Sooo... bbq'd him up and it was great! 23 inch, 5.5 lbs. Caught on 3" new penny Gulp shrimp under a popping cork and 8lb mono line with 17lb flouro leader. Fun stuff!
