I have been catch and release shark fishing a bit this summer and considering keeping a Blacktip for the grill. What is the safest way to dispatch a shark before boating?

Thanks

Drag it backwords in the water to drown it.

Here's what we dispatch big-uns with.

Smaller fish we wire 'em, swing 'em on the deck, grab 'em behind the head & cut the leader....... Don't do this unless you are proficent with this process.

i try not to keep anything bigger than 5 feet but we usually gaff them in if need be then give them a whack or two with a tee-ball bat and get to cutting, within 5 minutes of it hitting the deck it is headless, gutless, and tail-less sitting on ice.  want to get them bleed as quickly as possible, blacktip are great eating sharks!

Bullet is the fastes, most humane way.

We have had plenty of sharks in the boat...green, and it is a wild ride!

powerhead is good.

As far as legality goes......tell me if this sounds reasonable.

It is illegal to harvest a shark by spear, or gig a shark...defined as piercing the body of the fish with a sharp instrument....ect..ect... Same is also true for redfish, pompano, and permit.

However, it is completly legal, for any of these species, to use a gaff to subdue, or get them into the boat, AFTER harvesting them by means of hook and line...even though gaffing falls into the definition of giiging or spearing.

Now to firearms. Illegal to harvest a shark by means of firearm, or any fish by means of firearm in state waters.

But if harvested by hook and line, and brought to the boat, and subdued by means of firearm...if gaffing on those species is legal, it would follow to reason shooting also.

Just my thoughts
