OK, Odd twist.

After the pastor talked with the music guy, he (the music guy) announced Sunday morning that the church would would be voting on him this Wednesday during our regularly scheduled business meeting.

He did this knowing that the music and personnel committees had voted unanimously NOT to recommend him for the position and the pastor told him he could stay on until a replacement was found.

I felt this was a huge breach in protocol. Not sure where to go from here.

I am currently the chairman of our churches personnel committee. The way we are structured, chair of the trustees runs the business meeting and a vote on any new minister would first need my committees recommendation, a vote from the deacons and an approved salary package from the stewardship committee along with a vote and approval from the trustees. Without all of that - it ain't on the agenda and even if it comes up from the congregation under new business could not be voted on since it's against bylaws to not have all of those things in place. Gotta figure if you have a personnel committee that says no to this dude, it's not going any farther.
Sounds like a big ole mess and I'm glad it's not us! My prayers will be with your church leadership and specifically your music guy. Hoping he can accept the decisions made and not stir the pot.

I'm afraid that's what he is doing. The chair of the music committee told me that he was campaigning for votes during choir practice, knowing that he wasn't going to be recommended.

My initial thought is that he's trying to stir the pot. This is not the Christian thing to do and is counter productive for himself. I can't see how we can keep him at our church at all if he's trying to create division.

The music committee met Tuesday night and voted to give him the chance to remove himself from consideration to save face for his misstep on Sunday morning hoping that it was just a miscommunication or misunderstanding. In this meeting it came to light that he had been verbally abusive to his wife on several occasions during choir practice and had also been verbally abusive to our organist (who is the sweetest grandma lady you can imagine) our two piano players and the AV staff. He apparently does this in a manner that other people are not aware that it's happening and none of the ladies had said anything to anyone before Tuesday night. They were in tears.

Well, the music guy declined to remove himself, which put our new pastor and both the music and personnel committees in a very awkward predicament last night. We had the business meeting as planned and voted on the youth guy and he was called with a 97% margin. One member asked why we weren't voting on the music guy. The chair of the personnel committee said that they had never recommend him for the position and they weren't able to give that recommendation at this point. We had about 45 minutes of very uncomfortable back and forth with the committee chair and pastor doing all they could to not speak poorly of him. At the end the Pastor completely threw himself under the bus and took the blame for the announcement Sunday morning. At the point that I learned he had been abusive to some of the sweetest ladies I know, I was ready to fire him on the spot, but felt the Christian thing would be to allow him to save face. I feel now that was the wrong decision.

After a night with a lot of prayer and very little sleep I feel there is only one thing we can do.

He chose to perpetuate a lie to the church and should not be allowed back in the pulpit.

Man I hate that. I was in a business meeting 25 yrs ago where it got so stressful one lady fainted and I broke out in hives the next day and had em for a week! Swore to never attend another meeting and didn't for 15 yrs. The business of the church can be difficult because it's not a business and can't be treated that way. Your pastor needs to step up, go to this guy with a couple of deacons present and tell him we love you, we're praying for you, we are your friends and good luck with whatever you do next. Your services are no longer needed.
