Default 7/29 Gulf report

Launched out around the Portofino with Bigred38 at about 0600 with the intent of finding a few kings that were willing to play. I told him when we launched out that things seemed to be firing up at about 0730, and dying off around 0930-1000.

Well, for an hour and a half we got nothing. Nada. Not even a run. At 0729, my rod loaded up with the first, and ultimately largest, king of the day at 12 pounds. I was using a 7'0 MH bass rod and twelve pound test... It was a blast! Shortly after, Eric (Bigred38) hooks up with his first king ever. it ended up being barely legal, so we tossed him back.

Between 0730 and 0930, we caught 7 kings, the two largest being 12 and 11 pounds, with a double hook up right at 0930. We kept the largest two and let the rest swim on. All my fish were caught on a silver duster and cigar minnow, his on a naked cig. I think we may have a new yakker in the clubhouse, because this was his first yak trip and he had a blast!

Here is the 12 with me and my son.

we started getting bites at about the .75-1-mile mark, thats also about the time he said he started getting bites. Meaning that we got to the .75-1 mile mark around 7:20. I feel like we paddled out to about 2.75-3 miles then started running parallel to the beach. Once we started running parallel to the beach is when we really started laying into the fish. Besides the 7 caught we probably lost 3-4 more fish a piece due to either faulty hook up or just thrown hooks in general. Blake actually had a stud that ripped through his single wire leader, not to say that the leader wasn't already faulted from other fish. All in all it was an amazing trip and to catch my FIRST king in a yak was awesome!
