FREE Dive Emergency Management Workshop

“Are you a diver, boat owner, dive professional or charter Captain and think that you have an emergency plan for those diving with you?”

In the wake of recent unfortunate events, and after years of inattention, it has come to light that many in the dive community are unsure of proper emergency procedures and protocols in the unlikely event of a dive accident. The protocols set forth by local officials have not been reviewed, nor altered, since their original implementation some years ago. In light of recent incidents these protocols are being reviewed to ensure that those involved in the diving community have a standard course of action. This however may take months or even years to go through proper channels and to be released to the dive community. Although the number of diving incidents has been small in the preceding years, we are all still met with these challenges. We are all faced with this realty so the question is “What would you do?”

“Help may not be as close as you think!”

This inattention has also been exacerbated by the lack of hyperbaric centers that will treat diving related injuries. Over the past 8 years there has been a steady decline in the number of working hyperbaric facilities willing to treat Decompression Illness. There are 200 hyperbaric facilities in the State of Florida alone, however only three of them will treat divers. This in our professional opinion has gone beyond a crisis stage.

Program Director, Julio Garcia, RN, of Spring Hill Memorial Services (nearest Florida Panhandle hyperbaric chamber facility) has been working for many years with DAN (Divers Alert Network) and local services to ensure that divers in need of chamber facilities reach his facility within an adequate amount of time to combat the effects of DCS. Until a local hyperbaric chamber is available for the treatment of dive injuries, we must ensure a timely response to dive incidents along the Gulf Coast, channeling an injured diver to adequate medical facilities and to ensure proper diagnoses and treatment.

“Come join us so we can clarify some long standing myths and get you a plan to help when minutes count!”

MBT Divers will be hosting a Dive Emergency Management Workshop on Wednesday, February 1st at 6pm, with guest speaker, Julio Garcia, RN. Mr. Garcia is extremely passionate about ensuring the safety of divers and has dedicated much of his personal time to a resolution. We invite you and strongly encourage the attendance of all involved in the dive community as your input and understanding of these protocols will assist with the growth and safety of the dive community in the future.

Please feel free to contact MBT Divers with any questions or for additional information.
