There are two or three threads about this in General Discussion or Off Topic. Just look around.

You can check with Casey Bunton at Passport Marine in Pensacola. Do you have any additional USCG credentials like a MMC, AB,etc...?
You can also check out rigzone.com as they have posting on there for job openings. |

The < 100Ton boat companies are always looking for reliable deckhands that will do their job and show up when they're supposed to... McCall (Seacor), Tidewater, Trico, Diamond Services, and many others are located all across bayouland (Venice La, to Galveston Tx. Many will require training, all will require a drug screen. Expect between 100-200 dollars a day. Before I would go through a "head hunter" employment agency, I would drive over to Houma/Morgan City, LA, and knock on doors. Also, check the local newspapers there. NOLA.com usually has some listings seeking deckhands. Good Luck.

I have a friend who has been a commercial fisherman for 25 yrs. He and his son tried king fishing this past summer off of Louisiana. I think they ran out of Port Fouchon. After the season closed, his 19yr son knocked on some doors back in November. I believe he was in Leeville??? He has just finished his first 28 days on the 100 ton crew boat, "Mr Nicholas". He will do the 28 days on and 14 days off routine. He walked into three boat companies that day.
PS........... He tells his dad, "It's easier than fishin and I get a guaranteed $110/day!" $3000 every six weeks and 19yrs old....... and still gets to catch some fish! Looks like his dad has lost him for awhile. Last edited by Captdroot; 01-18-2012 at 09:57 PM. Reason: grammar |

The smaller companies are looking because the hands puts in there time, get their AB or QMED and move on to the bigger companies and the better money. Smaller companies are great for folks starting. You can wear shorts, fish, trust your shipmates, wear flip-flops and no hardhst or safety glasses while washing the boat. Those things will not happen with the bigger companies but you do it if you want the big money. Do your time get your AB and then apply somewhere else. AB's make anywhere from $270-$400 a day depending on company. In two to three years you could be in the wheelhouse/Bridge making 6 figures a year. Things take time. Start early and be patient and you will make more money then 90% of the folks you know. This comes with a price though, being away from home and family. I know someone posted stay away from Headhunters but that's how I hot started and they will also get you a fair starting day rate. Afterall THIER paycheck depends in yours. I wouldn't ruling out bostjob1 on the forum as an avenue to getting into the industry. If it was so easy they wouldn't be as many post on the PFF about how and what to do to get a job. It will cost about $400 just to go to the bayou and hit all these places. $100 in gas ( if you have a small car) $100 a night in motel rooms ( rounding up, the are about 89) and $100 for misc. You can forget about getting hired as an OS or Wiper be filling out apps on the Internet. These companies have 15 folks walking in the door everyday. Goodluck and hope you find a job. You have made the 1 st step with getting your TWIC. 80% of the folks will not even do that or they can't afford to spend that much money without a guaranteed job |

I also got my first oilfield job through a head hunter. He took $1200.00 of my first 90 days. After that, I wrote down every company's name from every offshore company I encountered. I'm not saying the fellow ripped me off, it just cost me the $1200. I never once paid for a job after that. I also discovered that the company that hired me through him would have paid $30 more per day if I had just applied through them instead of the HH. Live and learn. Before driving to S. La., I would collect a list of potential employers and tell them you'll be dropping by. I got a job once through a company that simply refered me to another company.
