welldoya (7/8/2009)I was just looking at the picture of the installation. If my meter is on the side of the house but I want my generator under the porch about 75' away, how does that work ? Would I have to get a 75' long heavy-duty cord to run from the generator outlet to the generator ? Or would that be too far ?

The way I understand it is with a 5500 watt generator, I would just turn off the breakers that run the central AC and hot water heater, correct ? Everything else (except probably the stove) would work OK. I'm just talking about outlets and overhead lights.
I was just lookin at that picture too. Isn't the "generator outlet" actually the generator inlet??

You could have the gen inlet box 75' away from the meter box via conduit and individual conductors. Might be initially cheaper than a 75' cord that can handle the same amps. But on the other hand if you did it with a cord, you would be able to use that cord elsewhere in the future.
Inlet/outlet, you know.

But yes, I can either run the inlet farther away or you can use a cable for the extra distance. You will need a cable with the corosponding NEMA 14-30R ends on the cord anyway to hook your generator up to the inlet no matter where you put the inlet. It's going to be about the same amount when you factor in labor and materials to hard wire the inlet vs. using a SO cord or something like it to make a cable. They make pre-made cables of about 25 feet at the box stores. 75' will not be a problem though either way.

Welldoya,

You can run everything that is not 220 volts in your house as you need it off of your 5500 watt generator. I do. All of your outlets, lights, ceiling fans etc... will work as if gulf power was still on. You could even turn off everything and use one eye on the stove or run your hot water heater to get a few warm showers. That is if everything else is shut off while running those items. I run two refrigerators, a stand up freezer, lights and fans as I need them, a 5000 btu window AC unit, and TV as needed as well. I have use of most everything in my house except my central AC on this setup and my 5500 watt generator.

It should work out. A few other factors to consider though. If you would like this done, shoot me a PM and I can stop by to discuss it.

Giving this a late bump to the top. I will soon stop doing any more installs oncemy out of state move get's closer. If you want this done before I get out of town in the spring, please get with me. I have talked with many forum members that are always on the fence about getting this done. It's really a good easy insurance policy when the power goes out.

Just the other day, I lost power for about 2 hours. Football was on and I wanted to see the game. Without this switch, I wouldn't even think about bothering with pulling out the generator and running extention cords. But since the switch was intalled, I just wheeled my generator out, plugged it into the switch and instantly had power to the house again and I finished watching the game. Power came back on and I simply unpluged the generator and wheeled it back into the garage. Easy as can be.

Bumping this back up to the top to see if there is enough interest to start back up the installs now that I am back in the area. I will need to re-evaluate material costs. Total cost will probably edge up a little. I have not looked at it for two years ever since moving to SC and moving back. If there is enough interest I will see about starting installs again.

For some reason, I cannot edit the original post. If there is enough interest, I will start a new thread with the new info.
