My last few trips to the beach to do a little surf fishing i've been seeing quite a few kayaks out on the water loaded with fishing poles. That looks like too much fun! i want to try it. My question is what kayak do i want to buy? I'm a pretty big boy. 6'2" 285lbs. I need one that my fat ass wont sink. I live in gulf shores and will probably start out in little lagoon and then probably try the gulf. any info you could provide would be much appreciated. :letsdrink

Don't worryso much about sinking as tipping. I'm 6'2" and 250 and I have a Wilderness 160. It's easy to paddle, but is a little top heavy with my big butt in it.I really want to add outriggers to add some stabilty.

I testedquite a fewbefore I bought mine and I would highly recommend doing that. The WS 160 SOS Marine was referring to was tippy to me, and I have a skinny butt. (It was extremely fast though.) The most stable that I tested was the OK Prowler Big Game. It seemed designed for a big guy. You sacrafice a little for speed with a wider yak, so I opted for a regular Prowler since I wasn't planning or gaining 100lbs or standing up in it.

I didn't test a Hobie because I have a bad knee and need the extra exercise for health reasons. Oh, and it was out of my budget...:doh

I tested none and bought the first cheap one I found off the forum. One way to do it is to just buy the cheapest one with rod holders you can find that's seaworthy - use it for a while then sell it (or keep it for a friend) and go out and get the kind you want based on that experience. Me....I probably should've bought a hobie by now but I'm too cheap and lazy so I just keep dragging my 11' pelican accross the sand.

I have a O.K. prowler big game and it is the best money I've ever spent. It is the most stable yak I've been in although a close second would be the malibu X-factor. I'm not a big guy ( 5'8" 175lbs.) and I still have no problem with maneuverability. It is a little slower than more narrow models but I like to fish offshore for kings, sharks, etc. so stability was more of a determining factor for me. Its also a little easier for me to swing the rod tip around the bow or stern since it is a little shorter. Main disadvantage is that it is pretty hard to carry by yourself but your also a lot bigger than me. Most places I put in at are right next to the water so Ican just drag it a short distance. I fish out of gulf shores 90% of the time and I'd say west pass would be your easiest launch.

Here is a really good deal if you are looking for a good used kayak. Included in the price are carbon fiber paddle, PFD, and a live well with a bilge pump. You'd have another $300 tied up in a good carbon fiber paddle (I use a BB Carbon Fiber paddle and love it!!) and PFD if you had to buy them separate and I have no idea what a live well with an electric bilge pump would cost.

I would say that this is the deal of the year!!

Hey guys! I won't be quitting kayaking but I just don't have the time to go out anymore. School is starting and I have a billion other things on my mind and no time for kayak fishing. If I do have time to go I can just use my sister's T140 or T160 =D. Anyways, I have here a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 140 Mango for sale, she's super fun to paddle and I really hate letting her go but I need the money. I've taken her out only about a dozen times so she's still in good condition, hardly any hull scratches and the ones that are there are really minor. I'm letting her go for only $700 and for $800 I will throw in a Carbon paddle and pretty nice life vest, along with a live well bucket with bilge pump and hosing. All the live well needs to be running perfect is a battery and a new switch. I put in a couple rod holders and new handles too.

UPDATE: I'm selling her for only $700 with a carbon paddle and pfd. I'm in need of some money so that's why it's so low.
