A good starter yak would be a Pelican. I've got the Castawayand its been awesome. I think Academy has them for around $400-500.

Fishing the grassflats and docks would be a great place to start off. It will be calm andyou can catch a redfish in no time.I like Woodlawn Beach for launching.

Either that or look for a used kayak. I fish santa rosa sound almost exclusively for inshore, there are plenty of good launch sites in the area.

I am also looking my first kayak. I am a bigger guy and need one that can float someone my size. I called about the Pelican listed on here this morning, but it was already sold. I called Academy and they sell the 11'6" Pelican for $369. I was also given the link to the gulfcoastkayakfishing.com, there are supposed to be some used kayaks on there for sale, but they have yet to send me my password so that I can veiw the forum. I am not sure that I will be doing a lot of fishing from it, but I just purchased my first reel that will hopefully allow me to finally catch a shark and I need some way to get the bait out. I tried floating it out at Fort Pickens last Saturday night, but the wind andcurrent kept it coming to the beach all night. I was able to get it out once, but everyone seemed to have a problem with me swimming a slab of bonita out, especially my wife, so I am now in the hunt for a cheap ride that will float.

Woodlawn beach is good as mentioned. Oriole Beach boat ramp is a great spot as well as the Gulf Breeze state park. Both have very easy access to the water with no grueling distance to drag your yak. The state park does not open until something like 8am so I usually hit one of the other spots for morning trips.

Panic,

I have a Pelican Castaway, got it a year ago at Academy. I believe for a starter Yak, this is ideal. If ever you wanna try one out shoot me a PM

& I'll let u take her for a spin if you'd like, get it wet catch a fish & i promise you'll be hooked just like me & the many other yakkers out here. I

fish it in the Sound, Bay, & Gulf, it may not be top price, but I believe she works like a charm. It weighs about 60 pounds unloaded & getting it

to the water just requires a vehicle & some rope. Also with a Gulf boat you can tie it to the side, head out to where the big boys are get drug

around for awhile, I've done it twice now & there's nothing like it.
