Ok here is the deal. I really do not want to hurt any of you guys who are selling anchor pins but I made this and I have to share.
I went to home depot and these are the materials. ![]() This is a 1/2" x 12" eye bolt -$3.06 ![]() Rod coupling nut - $1.14 ![]() This is a 1/2" x 10 foot threaded rod. 10 feet is the only size home depot had that was big enough - it was this or a foot. So you have to cut it in half with a hacksaw. keep in mind your eye bolt is already a foot long. You could even make two anchor pins two sizes with excess material. ![]() This is what the finished product should look like. Really simple. I made mine to be in 5 and half feet with the eye bolt. The end is not cut at an angle, it is really hard to cut against the threads with just a hacksaw. I don't think it will make much of a difference though. If its a problem, you can always sand it or just use a electric blade. As for salt water corrosion, it should hold up for a while if you rinse it and take extra care of it. You can always paint it though. In any case it only cost $10. Hope this helps somebody. I will be trying it out on tuesday, hope it works. |

I hope you put lock tite on the threads. Even so in saltwater, that coupler may loosen up and you will be left with the top part and drifting. How much does it weigh? More important, I bet it will bend in a stiff current or wind. Unlike the glass anchor pins that flex. Sometimes cheap is not the way to go. And as for corrosion, don't hold your breath. One last thing. Threads will ready do a number on a plastic Kayak hull.

Spray it down with some paint real good and it should last a good while in salt water... pretty innovative!

Spray it or dip it inliquid vinyl (Home Depot / Lowe's) - will protect from corrosion and soften the threads...

Well I galvanized the whole thing and sealed the nut with some welding paste. I also added a half inch clear tube that runs below the nut until about an inch and half before the end of the threaded metal. This thing is going to work like a charm. I also went out and bought some straps that I rigged to the side of the kayak that will hold it while I paddle. Going to take it out tomorrow.
