Hey guys, I've been lurking for a while and decided to join because I want to go WAY offshore, like 4 or 5 miles, this Friday or Saturday early if it is calm. I've been kayaking for a year and a half and have probably already fished with some of you at navarre pier. I recently started going out 1-2.5 miles offshore to the sandflea and urchin reefs and some tanks. I've had some success with juvenile grouper and some decent snapper, but want to try further out, and was wondering if someone with a fishfinder wanted to go. Until I order a fishfinder I just have to hope the public GPS #'s are good, and I've read that some of them are off. Would hate to go way out and end up fishing over sand bottom.
Also, I had a few questions for the guys who fish snapper and grouper successfully. What rig do you usually use? I've seen you catch some with jigs, but I'm sure you use bait as well. Do you use long leaders? I've heard you get more bites, but I have a harder time hooking fish. I've tried squid, bonito, and cigar minnows as bait and had some success with all, but had some trouble with attracting schools of remoras as well. Also, do you anchor or drift? I can stay in position over a certain spot by anchoring, but wasn't sure if it is more effective and less likely to spook the fish if you just drift. Sorry for all the questions, but details are what separates guys that waste time floating around on pieces of molded plastic from guys who catch fish ![]() Here are some pictures for you guys to enjoy. I'm from Washinton state originally and went to college in Philadelphia before getting stationed here. Have a great fourth of july :usaflag ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Caught this snook and some other nice fish on a solo camping trip in the 10,000 islands area of the everglades over memorial day weekend. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

welcome to the forum.
if your looking for a yak buddy, you can go to the GCKFA website.theres a bunch of yakkers on there willing to ride out. as far as this weekend is concerened. i will be hiding in the shallows and in between docks. too many boats, too much alchohol. i havent installed a bottom finder on my heritage yet. but will in the next few weeks. when i do i will paddle out with ya. good luck and tight lines. Thanks guys. I did get out Friday morning and caught one big red snapper, but made the mistake of unhooking it over the water and he flipped and shot back down to the bottom. Oh well, I know where he's at, and the fight was great out of the kayak on fairly light tackle.
I'm thinking about buying the Eagle Fishmark 320, any thoughts? I want to be able to takethe displayon and off the mount easily, does anyone know if the mountit comes with can do that? Thanks |
