Howdy all, i got a new pelican castaway 116 dlx, but i have a few questions.
1, How is the best way to store it. i.e. just lay it down, or stand it up, or buy saw horses?( i live in a town house w/o a garage) 2, For a non motorized boat do you need nav. lights ?( i have a all around light) 3, Does everything need to be leashed down? 4, Is there anything thats a MUST HAVE that i dont know about? i have a pfd, anchor and trolly system, paddle, milk crate w/ net holder, multi use boaters basket, all around light, upgraded seat, vent tool and dehooker, and whistle. thanks the only stupid question is one that goes without being asked.:usaflag |

Visual distress signal (Flares etc) are now required. No need for nav lights. Yes, lash or add a float to everything of value or you will lose it. (another pair of pliers gone last week)
Store it upside down or on it side. Not on saw horses unless you use a rail system to spread the weight out lengthwise. Keep it out of the sun while storing. UV rays are hard on plastic. Good luck fishing. Ted |

I didn't realize a visual distress signal was required...what else fits this requirement besides flares? I read a tip on the forum a while back that has come in handy. I use frozen water bottles for my cooler bag. This really works to keep the fish cold, and if my trip last longer than expected, the melted water comes in handy to quench your thirst.

Thanks for the heads up on the Flares. Anybody who goes offshore should have them whether required or not.

Visual distress signal can be a mirror, an orange distress banner, flares, a white flashlight to warn approaching boats at night, a flashing beacon. I carry several and keep at least one on my person in case I get separated from the yak.
