Default Almost loss prof yak anchor.

Here is a simple homemade anchor that will hold a yak on hard bottom about any time and soft and grassy bottom when the curent/wind isn't bad.

I used copper ground wire for the tines and 1-1/4" PVC for the shank. Construction ought to be pretty much self-explanatory if you look at the attached photos. Since I use mine as my primary anchor, I poured 2# of 00 Buckshot for weight then completed filling the pipe with concrete. Total weight of mine is ~4#.

If the anchor gets hung, get straight over it and pull until the tines straighten. When anchoring, make sure you are going slow when you drop. I don't have any chain on mine because I won't use it in more than 10' or so.

File the ends smooth so they won't scratch your yak. I bent the tines to where they will fit inside a 2# coffee can for storage.

With enough light anchor line (4/0 loaded with 130 on a 2' rod) this anchor should hold a yak in fairly deep water. You might need to make it a little larger and add more lead. 6# ought to be a gracious plenty.

Here's one I made several years ago for the kayak. It still works great to this day. Used 1/4" aluminum solid rod. I poured the lead around the aluminum using a piece of 1 1/4" schedule 40 PVC.

Capt. Ken's looks easier to make though, and probably cheaper also. I had an idea for a 2-3 lb. mushroom anchor for the kayak. The smallest mushroom anchor that is readily available is 6 lb. and you don't need anything that heavy for the kayak. My little grapple anchor weighs two pounds and it's held two kayaks in a pretty good breeze before.

That sucker looks great! The little plastic things on the tines are a nice touch too.

Re: Mushroom for yak. I'm not in love with mushrooms bit I've made several tiny ones using Aluminum ash trays filled with lead. I made some even smaller ones for duck decoys for rough days in the Mobile Delta. They held decoys in 3' seas but the decoys didn't look too realistic.

Re: cost. I had all of the stuff in my scrap heap. The Copper ground wire is expensive.

If you have to buy everything, less than $5 I guess. You don't even need lead. If you have some some, soon to go bad, epoxy or polyester resin, mix it with sand for weight and to hold the hooks in place.

looks like a great idea...I like the simplicity. I have been using a stake out pole for shallow water, but I may need to add this to my set up.

Those are NICE anchors... great ideas guys!! :bowdown :clap

I think my shroon anchor weighs more than 6 lbs... maybe8 or 10lbs and it's coated in a black rubber so it doesn't get stuck or scratch the yak. There has been several situations where the smaller claw anchors (most people use for yaks) were not enough to hold my yak still... I would drift slightly.. then had to keep redoing it.:banghead I leave my anchor in my vehicle at all times so I won't ever forget it again. :doh

After thinking about Nathan's anchor then thinking about the standnfish system, I am gonna slide some heat shrink over the tines of mine---maybe go with tygon tubing. This will prevent a lot of sctatches.

A lot of input to a common problem could lead to something great.

I am definitely going to build a lighter version.

I'm in Rome Ga for a family event today but plan to head home tonight.
