I'm looking for some plastic drums that have resealable tops. I need something to store dry corn. Send me a PM if you know where I might find some drums.
Try calling 850-994-2729, the guys name is Mason and he lives next to the WalMart in Pace. He used to have the 55 gal removable top barrels for $20-$25 each.
Smitty, You can get the light weight aluminum(not sure but they are light and food grade) apple juice barrels at the vernon feed and seed with snap ring tops for $19
..... but no matter how well you seal it up - weevils will eat your corn and you will be left with hollow kernals and dusty weevil crap by July. Trust me - they are already in it.
Try, I don't know about you but my corn does not last that long. By a fluke I still have 400lbs from over 3 months ago and it is fine. All grains have bugs, even your refined flour in the cabinet, just rotate. I typically buy and use it in 2 mos or less so never been a problem. We hunt & feed year round but you are right tough to store now till next deer season.
Always a few in the winter but when nightime temp starts staying above 70.... the weevil population will explode.... always wondered if I could store it in the freezer
I keep my corn in steel barrels at the lease in the shade all summer and never have a problem, of course I rotate and use the oldest first, even store bread from the day old store and it stays a month and no mold.
I have a guy with steel barrels with lids that bolt on and rubber gaskets if you want to go that route. They have humidity indicators on them and were once used to store large munitions on a certain local bombing range. We've used them for corn and never had a problem. Current batch has been in there 6 months and is as fresh as day 1.
