30-30 is the best gun for whitetails in my opinion. Field and Stream ranked the marlin 336 chambered in 30-30 the number 3 deer rifle of all time. I have other deer rifles but my first choice is the 30-30 especailly with hornadys lever revvolution. I have killed probably 40 deer with it and the one that went the furthest went 6 feet. For a first gun for a kid, it would be great if they could handle the kick.

most shots on our lease are under 100 yd, so the 30/30 is fine. I just can't leave my BAR 30/06 home though.
