when talking about starting the young'ens off on a rifle, I've hardly seen any mention of a 30-30. Why not? I was comparing shells this weekend and it looked as the 30-30 has less powder than a .243. Larger lead I know and that produces its on set of pro's and con's. But shouldn't the kick be less on the 30-30? Don't know because I've never shot a .243.

Just wondering. I have a 30-30 in the safe, my first rifle, and if you were to start a young boy off would it be better to buy him a rifle or just let him use that one? The 30-30 is probably heavier, but I don't think he'll be able to shoot anything without a rest so that point should be mute.

I think the 243 is preferred because of the small youth size stocks you can get and some being able to change the stock as the kid grows.I could be wrong but it had alot to do with our decision when getting a gun for my son.

I personally like a 30-30 especially for scrub hunting.

3030 is the gun i grew up on. ive killed more deer withmy 3030 than any other gun i own. i actually hunted with it this past weekend. the only down fall to a 3030 is the shot distance but hornady has recently made a bullet called the lever revolution and it is suppose to be able to shoot up to 200yrds with great accuracy. i sighted my gun in at 100yrds and was dead on with every shot. but the one good thing that i can really remember about my 3030 is ive never lost a deer with it. i really cant even remember having to track a deer more than about 50yrds or so.

I have a Marlin 30-30 and love it. I've been hunting with it for 5 years now. ScullsMcNasty I can confirm with the Hornady LeveRevolution bullet that you can easily kill deer at 200 yards and possibly out to 300 yards if you were to practice enough. Proof is from a shot I made 2 years back. Using the Hornady bullet I took down a thick 6 point Alabama buck at 175 yards that dropped in his tracks without taking a step. My best shot yet on a deer.

For kids I would say that depends on the kid what would be best for them. Larger kids 10-12 should be able to handle a 30-30 kick no problem. I bought my11 year old sonan H&R single shot .25-06 thinking the kick would be lighter for him but it's as muchor more than my 30-30. Regardless he shoots his .25-06withease sohe would have no problem with my 30-30.

Smaller younger kids wouldprobably do best with a .243 if it's kick is noticeably less than a 30-30.The good thing about either of these calibers isayoungster that starts hunting withone of them will probably have a deer rifle they use for life.

My Marlin 30-30 will always be my favorite now that Hornady hasextended it's range. I love the fact it is a short lightweight rifle thatholds7 shots. I've already notice it's a lot easier getting in and out of deer stands with it than my sons longer .25-06.

I took my first deer with my trusty ole 4-10 single shot, dropped that nanny in her tracks at 40 yards!! My dad moved me up to the 30-30 the next year. I couldnt shoot it at 11 years old though since it was a top eject rather than a side eject ( the scope was mounted 2 inches off the barrel). So in exchange I got the .243. But I will never go hoofing through the woods without my 30-30! Its hard to Beat a rifle with a 20 inch barrel!!!

Your right it doesn't have the powder of the .243 or 7mm-08 ,but it does have a harder kick. I also know the other two rounds have more reach than the 30-30 so alot of people buy those calibers for the kids to grow up with. My son had the oppurtunity to trade his .243 for a brand new 30-30 and turned it down just because he loves that gun, true whoever has their first gun would probably never trade it, but to him it simply because it is an effective gun with no recoil and he can shoot it better.

i love a 30 30 it's what i learned to hunt with.my uncle hunts with his and he's killed over 300 deer with it,the only rifle i've ever known him to use.

I have a 30-30 and a 243. I love them both and have never needed anything else for where I hunt.

I love my 30-30, but hte physcial size got to small for me. I couldn't ever get a scope mounted right that I could throw up and see easily without constantly adjusting my head. Other than that I would still be using it.

I guess I'm just ignorant to the size of the lead being important in the kick. But I guess that makes since, F=ma so if you increase m or a you increase the force and hence the kickback. The .243 has more powder so more a, but also less mass so less m.

I may have to look for a .243 then. I'll wait though until he's pretty good with the 22 first

I have shot all the rounds, and personally can't tell the difference in recoil. The .243, 30-30, .25-06, .308, and .30-06 all feel the same to me. I'm sure they all have a different amount of recoil in lbs, but as far as felt recoil I can't tell the difference. Same thing with my 12 gauge and muzzle loader, they all feel like they kick about the same to me.

The only round I've shot that had considerably less recoil was a .223, and I don't consider it big enough for anything but head shots on deer. (I know some people think it's big enough).
