Five Prongs Of Fury (10/27/2008)I am gonna have to respectfully disagree about the ballistic tips blowing up when striking a rain drop or a blade of grass. I have shot through limbs as big as my thumb and still killed the deer behind it. This is nothing more than a myth IMO.
If you have had that kind of success with them I wouldn't change a thing. But, even the manufacturer would suggest that you don't shoot them in heavy cover, much less through limbs.

Don't get me wrong, I am not poor mouthing Balistic tip bullets, they are in most cases a very high quality bullet, but they are built for a purpose and that is for rapid expansion at impact, which on a 200lb buck is not what I would desire to use to get to the part of the animal I want to effect the most, weight retention is very important to carry through a larger animal.
I agree with you on the fact that they may not be the right medicine for a deer in the 200 lb class. With that said I have only killed 2 deer in the past 6-8 years that broke the 180 lb mark.

Today's ballistic tips are not the same as they were when they first came out. I first tried them to get more uniformity than led tiped bullets. They are more consistant, and hold their shape better. This is better for someone like me, that load and unload more than they shoot.

I was a core lock man for many years. Now, I have to have my 140gr. Federal Premium Nosler ballistic tips in a 7-08.

The best bullet is one that works for you. Confidence is the recipe for accuracy. Good luck to all of you !!

Behind the shoulders with does and with my bow. If hes a wall hanger and I have my rifle then I go for the running gears also. Straight through the shoulders. Most of the time with my .308, 300wsm, or 7mag they usually end up laying where they were standing.

I agrre with Garbo on the ballistic tips. Corelokts, sp boat tails, or a partition bullet are what I like to shoot.

A Core Lokt into the pump station-you may have to track a deer for a bit, but it ensures a quick and humane death. Neck shooters have a small anatomical target (I think the spinal cord makes up only 30% of the neck) and if you shoot a deer in the trachea, it's no guarantee it's gonna drop. I've seen too many deer with blown off jaws, noses and other horrible wounds by poor shooters trying for a neck/head shot. If you're gonna shoot for the neck, aim for a fists length down from the top ridge of the deer, you should find spine there, but If ya stick with the largest target (lungs), you'll never spend a sleepless night wondering what happened to the deer ya shot...

Interesting thought.
Because of my background I shoot for "center mass" heart, lungs, liver.
Can't help it, just too many years of training.

Regarding ballistic tips: I shot them for several years and they are very deadly, but too often I would not get an exit wound and therefore no good blood trail.
I hunt very thick areas, and that makes for tough tracking/trailing. I went back to Noslers a couple years ago, and problem solved.

Bowhunting is different, I always shoot for the lungs. Larger kill zone and more room for a less than perfect shot.

Only being able to use a shotgun.... behind the shoulders for me....I have shot them there quartering away and the slug logged into the other side shoulder....with no exit.....
facing me....I don't like the shot but will take it in the neck....
now if I am using the handgun anywhere in the front will do.....
I either hit the chest or miss....the first deer I ever killed was back(gut shot 32years ago) and swore then I would never do that again.....so I take my time when pulling the trigger and have good placement....some deer drop in there tracks and some others have run a little ways....but never to far

If we were allowed high powered rifles....the shoulder area would work good just to help expand the bullet for maximum damage

I put it behind the sholder in the lungs. I promise that with the 300 Mag they won't go far if anywhere. I can't stand tearing up meat. One reason I'm out there is to get meat. So I will not tear up meat intentionally.

As far as bullet choice, I will NEVER shoot a core lokt. They have never done justice to my shooting. It may be my gun, but in my .308 they wouldn't hold a decent group.

However I no longer have to deal with factory load junk. My dad loads Berger VLD hunting bullets. They have a long boat tail and are a hollow point. They are designed to shoot out past 5 or 6 hundred yards. Now I don't do this, but if I did it's nice to know that I could.

As far as the ballistic tip. I LOVED them when I was shooting factory loads. Winchester Silver Ballistic Tips were all I would shoot. I never had a deer run off. But I have shot 200lb deer with them and they drop in their tracks.

Lots of great comments on the post. It seems like a Ford vs Chevy conversation. Toyota for me!! Your opinion is formed by you experiences, good or bad, and what you have heard from others. Buy a quality ammo and sight it in. The most expensive, super exploding, glow the dark, uranium filled ammo is not always the best.

Shooting a good grouping (being accurate) is most important.
