Bullshark (3/15/2010) <P class=Body>The FWC reminds hunters they may continue to take Burmese pythons and all other reptiles of concern within three South Florida wildlife management areas (WMAs).<P class=Body>An FWC executive order effectively gives all persons with a hunting license and a $26 management area permit the authority to harvest pythons and other reptiles of concern (Indian python, reticulated python, northern and southern African rock python, amethystine or scrub python, green anaconda and Nile monitor lizard) on Everglades and Francis S. Taylor, Holey Land and Rotenberger WMAs from now through April 17 between one-half hour before sunrise and one-half hour after sunset.<P class=Body>All legal methods for taking alligators and game animals (including shotguns, rimfire rifles and pistols) may be used to take reptiles of concern. Centerfire rifles, however, are not allowed. Nets and snares also may be used, but no matter the method of take, all reptiles of concern must be euthanized on site.<P class=Body>Reptiles of concern may not be taken out of the WMAs alive and must be reported to the FWC within 36 hours by calling, toll-free, 866-392-4286, or by completing the online form. <P class=Body>Hunters may do what they wish with the reptile's skin and meat. However, according to the National Park Service, mercury testing on two dozen captured Burmese pythons in Everglades National Park revealed extraordinarily high levels of mercury in the meat ? levels well above what is considered safe to eat.<P class=Body>Officials estimate there are thousands of Burmese pythons in the wild in South Florida. The FWC's goal is to contain the spread of these pythons in the wild and prevent establishment of other reptiles of concern. Data collected by hunters on these state-managed lands will assist in preventing their northern movement.

As bad as we need those exotics gone, i cant believe FWC is regulating it. South F is so overan with exotics, not just reptiles but fish as well. I lived throughout the keys untill I was 12 or so, I had multiple Iguanas as pets and never had to buy one if that tells you somthing. We caught so many oscars, ciclids and other odd fish in the Glades it was crazy. The wife and i got married in Key West, on the way we stopped around Homestead and caught many Peacock bass and huge oscars in irragation canals, its sad how bad its become. Tamiami trail and alligator alley are full of crazy critters, instead of charging money to kill you should get a reward- my 2 cents

I agree why the piss would you put a season, times in which you can hunt them and limit on something that shouldn't be there in the first place and then charge them to hunt. They need to make them like hogs shoot them whenever you get the itch!
+ 1 They're an invasive species just like hogs so I don't get why there is a season and limits, makes no sense if you're really trying to get rid of something that doesn't belong there.

My guess is because it's a rare opportunity to hunt an exoctic critter which can only thrive in a very limited part of the state and country. I'm willing to pay big bucks to go elsewhere to hunt elk or moose and I'm sure there is some guy in Montana who would love an opportunity to tromp around the glades and hunta 10 foot long snake which he won't find in the wild anywhere else other than Africa. Just my 2 cents

They did not put a season on them or charge for a license. This was a good thing, there is no way to spin it. They opened up the WMAs to allow hunters to take weapons to kill some of the pythons when there were not any other seasons going on. You can hunt them during the other seasons also. If you hunt any other WMAs, no other additional license is needed, that license info is just for the non hunters who want to try this out or for those that don't hunt WMAs.
