Deeplines, if you are serious.....they won't get big enough to harvest...deer eat em up before they produce....

Here are a couple of my plots....not huge plots, but deer feel protected in mine....narrow and long on the 1st 1, and the 2nd 1 I just cut in this year and set up. My peas have been in the ground a few days over a week...Special planting procedure.....1big1 you been on here so you probably know that I soak my peas 16-24 hours then cast em out....24 hour germination that way!!! I've got clay peas/black eyes/limas out.....This year is 3 plots.....Summer, Summer/early fall, and winter plot.....My peas get maybe 10-14 inches and then get mowed down by my critters.....:letsdrink

Both of you guys peas are about 6" higher than mine even think about getting. As soon as they make a leaf the deer wipe them out.

Thats what I thoudgt about mine, you must have alot of deer, this is the first time I planted peas & saw a post where deer have to get used to them, I planted way too much, live & learn.

Bill, you can never plant too much of them.....I usually make em a lot thicker but I'll wait for my winter plot....My summer plots, I usually use about 50 lbs for just that skinny plot in my 1st picture...The deer will scarf em down....:letsdrink

Jason's right. You can't plant to many. Once the deer find them there won't be any. We do have quite a few deer around on topof havingsome gardens in the area and I think they smell them there and smell them on our land and just destroy them. I've never had any get as high as either of yours are. I got about 2 weeks out of the last batch and it looked like I took a grooming mower to them. They just never let them grow. I usually mix some winter peas in with our food plot mix when we are planting. They come up scattered around and they are usually the 1st thing eaten.

I thought the bigger they got the tougher they got, just like the millet & the rye, turnips, oats....?

Bill, The 1st year I planted peas, they did let them grow up about 1.5 feet and had me worried that they weren't going to eat them. Even w/ all the green in the woods they will still eat peas like they are going outta style.....I feed my deer corn year around also. I bought 1200 lbs last week and the guy at the co-op said I was throwing my money away cause there was too much green in the woods.....Heck, I could throw out all 1200 lbs right now and it would be gone in about 2 weeks...Deer want the easy thing, just like trails...they would rather use the path of least resistance...You are talking about clay peas right??? About the middle part of bow season, I'll probably plant my winter plot which will consist of winter peas/wheat/oats/rape/turnips....

If you didn't catch the soaking I do w/ my peas/beans. I put my peas/beans in a barrel and soak them for up to 24 hours. The soaking helps the seed germinate so when we have drouts they will still grow. Remember when we grew lima's in a wet paper towel in school??? Same concept just larger scale. Only thing with soaking, it makes the seed softer so using a spreader will tear them up. I take a 1 gallon bucket and hand cast them...takes a litle longer but I like more hands on that way I know the seed gets there. Another way, I've been told, is to put the seed in the freezer and when you cast it out (you can use a spreader this way) the seed will dethaw and have a little moisture around it to help it germinate.:letsdrink
