Default Gobbling in January?

I was hunting at my camp near Laurel Hill Thursday when a gobbler cut loose at about 8:15 AM. This is the first time I can recall hearing one gobble in early January. I tried to call him in with my slate call and got him to come within 30 yards, but could never get a good clear shot. A young Jake did step out and I went so far as to sight on him and click off the safety, but decided not to take the shot. He will be a lot more fun to match wits with in another year or two. That gobbler continued to toy with me but stayed 100 yards or so out. He gobbled a total of 7 times with the last one about 9:45. Have any of you"ll heard gobbling this time of the year? It's certainly a rare thing in my neck of the woods.

This time of year the gobblers gobble to locate the rest of the group.

But I think they're all confused right now. With the weather like it is, they think it's spring time.haha

Shooting a turkey this time of year...well, it is out of season...be care my friend! :doh

If someone knows something I do not...please give me a heads up, as I see 2 dozen every time I hunt! As a matter of fact on the weekend of 12-20 I got to watch a couple gooblers spar on the private property I am hunting - very frigan cool...let me tell ya, those fellas don't play! I could hear the "THUMP" each time one would jump up to 'spur' the other...and I was easily 100 yrds away!!!! One of the coolest things I have watched...

TONY

Hey man, thanks for the heads up! :letsdrink

I had no darn idea, I am used to the WMA schedule for sure! I tried to look online (FWC) before I posted...but all I could find was WMA info. Obviously it is on there for sure - I just couldn'tfind it I guess. :doh

I listened to them in the last week of December. It sounded more like some young jakes tryin' to learn, but every once in awhile an ol' Tom would sound off and show'em how it's done. It was really cool to hear this time of year.
